I'm trying to get Synergy working between my Win7 PC and Ubuntu laptop, but I can't figure out why it won't connect.

As said, I have a Win7 desktop that I want to make the server for this and then connect my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. I'm running the latest version of Synergy (v1.4.2) on Win7 and 1.3.2 on Ubuntu.

Any help would be appreciated.

Firewall port open?

On the Windows PC, instruct the firewall to allow the synergy application.

Start - Control Panel - Windows Firewall - Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall - Allow Another Program - browse to the synergy application, select Add, make sure it's enabled for the zones you want (domain, home/work etc), and click OK.

Firewall popped up when I first ran and I allowed it. Checked again now and the exception is definitely there.

I'm sure I'm just being stupid somewhere. Could someone maybe write/point me in the direction of a decent tutorial for this (with specific focus on it being a Win7 server and Ubuntu client)?

I've had this same issue (a while ago) with Synergy and Win7 / WinXP. I'll have a look when I get home and give you some feedback.

Btw, are you running a direct cable between the two PCs or using a router?

Thanks!

This is happening through a router. The laptop is connected wirelessly as well. Does it have to be connected directly and/or via cable, because I remember it working fine when both machines were running Windows?

Tried it just now and got it to work without much trouble. I don't usually use the Windows firewall (I use ESET Smart Security's one), but I tested it with both. An exception for synergy worked in both cases.

The setup:
PC [Ubuntu 10.10 64bit, client] --cable--> Router --wifi--> Laptop [Win 7 Ultimate 64bit, server]
I used the stable version 1.3.6 for Win7 and the 1.3.1 .deb download for Ubuntu (haven't got internet on PC to use apt yet)

As I said, everything worked fine. Here are some things that I changed that you might want to double-check: (sorry if some of these sound obvious)
* Synergy server config: (I prefered the graphical config in the older versions...)
-----Screens; make sure you have both server and client screens
-----Check that the screen name for the Ubuntu machine is the same as its hostname (otherwise it doesn't connect), or alternatively use the -n option when running synergyc.
-----Links; check the links [I had to make two links for "A left of B" and "B right of A" for the mouse to be able to return]

If you still think the network is the problem, you might try using a different port.

Sorry I don't have a "this fixes the problem"-answer. But good luck.

Hrm...Ok, I downgraded back to 1.3.1 on Windows and ran "synergyc" (on Ubuntu obviously) with my IP and this time it seemed to work. Oddness.

Is there a way to get it to connect using my PC or screen name only?

Sorry, can't help you with that one -- I'm also have an issue with hostnames not resolving. I'm upgrading all my PCs to 10.10 somewhere in next week and will probably only fix it then.

You can check out the ubuntu forms seems like winbind is the lucky charm.
