When the screen was off, was the pc running normally? - (like if you press capslock, does the light go on?) or even did the pc beep?

Often video cards crap out or even the monitor may be on its way out. Try re-seating everything internally.

Also, right-click My Comp and click Manage. Then event viewer => Application

Theres probably a red X next to the program that crapped out
