Hey!

I am going to get a new graphics card shortly, some might know from my previous posts. Anyway to prepare I installed 3DMARK 03,05 and 06. Also I got PCMark05.

I currently use a GeForce 5900 PCX

Anyways I launch 3DMark 03 and 05 and it is able to run, but PCMark05 and 3DMARK06 instantly resets my computer when I launch them.

It resets with the initial splash screen saying PCMARK and 3DMARK, I dont even get into the program to choose settings or anything.

I went to error reporting in System Properties and the error is BAD_HEADER. (Dumping physical memory etc, blue screen)

Anyways, just wondered what is causing this

Probably your expensive graphics card or software. I am so sick of these graphics vendors turning out new models and never bothering with compatibility issues. I mean... at the price you should expect it to work.. always. Got the kids a PS2 - farrrr less stress

I hvant installed my new 7600GT yet, still waiting for it to be shipped to Cape Town. I am using my 5900 at the moment, so that could be the problem? Old card?

------
I just find it strange that PCMARK05 also does that.

Exactly what happens is:

1) Start >>>All Programs
>>> Futuremark >> 3DMARK06
* click 3DMARK06

Waits - splash screen comes up... takes like 10 seconds. Then it appears to check my A: drive for a second, and within 2 seconds after that I get the blue screen.

Hope this is of some use. 3DMark 06 (and I'm assuming 05) use texturing which is only compatible with much newer cards, ie NOT the 5xxx series nVidia or 9xxx series Radeons. Now 3DMark should go in, and then give you an error and a warning that it will only run on a newer card, but I would bet that this is your problem. On the newer card I don't see why it shouldn't work fine.

Hey, 3DMARK05 works fine on my computer, its PCMARK05 that doesnt work. I read about it everywhere and alot of poeple are having the same problem. It is caused by three different things:

1) Wireless network adapters
2) USB Storgae devices

and lastly the one I have, VIA Soutbridge Controllers.
I havnt really had a look at upgrading the driver yet, but I will try that stuff later, but I 3DMARK have identified it as a problem

9 out of 10 times when you place demand on hardware, especially expensive fancy ones... your powersupply might not have enough "Juice" left to cope with the sudden demand. It might be a good idea to reinstall first before taking your pc in to have a fancy 450 / 500w powersupply tested on your pc to see if your resetting problem goes away.

I've noticed this especially when you have a 300w or 350w power supply and you've got your second or third hard drive, fancy motherboard, couple of Optical drives etc etc and a string of USB devices...

most of the time those 300 / 350w power supplies are rated by the manufacturer at ideal conditions with hardly anything connected to them. which hardly makes them "Ideal" when you want to add that extra fancy graphics card with "nogal twee waaiers!".

on second thought - try this. (if you're a hardware hands on kinda guy and know not to skr3w up your pc...) open your pc, disconnect some hardware that you don't need to run your bench mark tests. Disconnect your optical drives, stiffy drive, extra hard drives, remove some other cards, or unplug a couple of non-essencial PC-Powered-USB devices and see if it makes a difference to your Rebooting problem.

let us know : )

Good luck

I built my own system (after getting the best parts from different suppliers that fitted my budget) so I will try and have a look when I have time again, what is causing the problem exactly..

This is my current system configuration:

Gigabyte 915P DUO Motherboard
2x 512MB DDR-400 (Dual Channel)
Intel Pentium 4 LGA-775 Prescott 3.0Ghz (32bit)
A-Open DVD-Reader
Sony CD-Writer
DVD-Writer
80GB Seagate SATA Drive 7,200rpm
250GB Western Digital SATA 7,200rpm
Gigabyte GeForce 5900 PCI-Express 128MB
2x Case fan extracting air @ back.
2x Case fan infront of system, blowing on HDD's
1x Case window fan
---------------
Powered by: KME 500W PSU

Gigabyte GeForce 5900 will be replaced with a Gainward GeForce 7600GT tommorow

i suggest you do a search online re power related problems!. they go into detail how to test your power supply if its capable of handling a huge load.

its quite a bit you have in that machine... 3 optical drives, 2 hard drives, 5 fans! and no doubt the graphics card has a couple of fans including the mobo!...

having a 500w powersupply doesnt mean you have enough. For all you know the problem is elsewhere!.

If i have time later, i'll find the link to the website i read up about power issues etc. and will post it here

Hey, I am rather certain the problem is with my VIA controller (if you read the post I made 2 or 3 above this one.

3DMARK identified it as a cause for the BAD_HEADER BSOD
(cant remember what the exact BSOD was now), but its listed on the 3DMARK site

thanks Person! I am getting my 7600GT today :) Will test with that first, just to make sure its not the 5900 for some reason.

Also as I think I said, I have downloaded a update for the VIA Controller, and I am going to unplug some CD-Roms, I got a Sony CD-Writer, and someone else on 3DMARK's site had a problem with a Sony drive

that 500 w power supply will run that easily fans use next to no power

neither do optical drives

why use pcmark though just leave it
it might be the software

reload windows and see if that helps

lol, yes it is a software conflict. lol, thats what I have been saying. ROFLMAO!
I got my 7600GT btw... using it now :) Will test later, and yeah 3DMARK06 and PCMARK05 isnt the biggest issue in the world.

okay, I got my new 7600GT as I said, tried 3DMARK06, system reset again... I simply disconnected my 3rd IDE CD-Rom that was connected on a VIA Controller "simulated" IDE channel and it worked.

So yeah, there is a problem with the VIA controller with 3DMARK's software, but I ran the test got 3048 3DMARK06 :)
Better than what I expected to be honest.
CPU only got 850 points :(
