My mom has an older Windows Phone and she is always running out of storage space. I just took a look at it now and the issue is system files which are 5.5gb. Combined with Whatsapp (really the only thing she uses) at just over 2gb that's the 8gb taken up. She has a SD card but you can't move Whatsapp to it. And you can't delete system files.

There's no breakdown of what the system files are.

Is there anything that can be done? It's obsence that the system can get so large that it takes up most of the storage on its own.

You could try a factory reset after backing up needed info, pics etc. Might save you some space.

know there is a way to convert an windows phone to android, just not sure how to do that,

think its only for the higher end phones.

One or two older models, which involves a lot of hard work.. and judging by the original post it's far beyond the OP's skillset

OP can try this after a reset and upgrade the phone to latest version right away without all the inbetween updates that fill up the smaller phones https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56120&fa43d42b-25b5-4a42-fe9b-1634f450f5ee=True&e6b34bbe-475b-1abd-2c51-b5034bcdd6d2=True
