Guys and girls,

Need some advise here: WinXP not on a domain. What software can I get to "lockdown" the desktop and system - meaning you can not move icons, delete files, fiddle or mess the system up, cant install apps or create folders all over the show. All that you can do is open the pre-installed apps and use them. Anything else, needs to be done by the Admin account.

I tried a few apps, but nothing really worked efficiently and the boxes still need frequent cleaning and uninstalling of crap the users loaded.

Thoughts and suggestions please, members of the IT collective ! :p

Thanks!

That is all possible using group policy. Its just a matter of trawling through all the available settings and applying functionality as you need it or don't need it. Only problem is that working in workgroup environment you either have manually configure the policy settings for every machine or create a security template and then import the settings onto every machine.

Will give SteadyState a try, thanks!
GPE also nice, but its a lot of tweaking and fiddling to get the desired result. But as last resort for some settings, yes, I go there! ;-)

SteadyState is very comprehensive, also have a look at X-Setup Pro - you can tweak all sorts of stuff with it. Look for version 6.6 to download, I think that was the last free version before it became trial/shareware whatever

That's the point. Users don't like in depth fiddling...
