tablet for 4 year old

From my personal experience - and I'm fairly certain my kids deliberately break things - I would rather buy them a LeapPad.

Over the last year they've broken 4 tablets between them. This was my fault in part as I didn't buy some sort of cover for the things.

Be that as it may, I think the LeapPad range of gadgets are more suited to the educational side of their growing up, so I'm getting my younger one one of these for Christmas.

Thanks, I'm leaning that way too. Only thing I'm unsure of is whether the leappad app store for south africa has the same stuff as US appstore and the apps are way more expensive than android apps.

Are you looking at the 3 or the Ultra xdi?

I'm actually not sure at all. According to reviews, apart from the screen, there isn't much difference between the two. I suppose I'll have to see whan my budget looks like when I eventually pull the trigger.

Just get those Samsung Tabs with the Kids OS - works like a charm. Get a decent cover, the rubberized ones work well. My daughter got hers for her 3rd birthday from an uncle. He said it was in the R2k range which is a bit steep compared to the Leappads but - since it runs on Android (Kids) all your apps can be free, where with the Leappad you have to actually pay for 90% of the apps.

Can't find a local one, but that is the one we have

Thanks, these are ones I hadn't considered. The Samsung one might be a bit expensive (more double the price of the leappad) but at least you have access to the play store

I'm a bit nervous about buying a really cheap tablet, I've bought a really cheap android phone before and it was incredibly slow and frustrating

Game have a few kids tabs and cheap tabs at the moment.

kids are rubberised and all while cheaper are just cheaper.

Starting from around R700 to around R2k

My 4yr very happy with his iPad 2, oddly enough he actually looks after the thing pretty well.

Place all his flicks on it as well for long trips in the car he has iPad mount behind head rest, keeps him entertained for a movies length.

Thanks for all the info / advice. In the end, I think I'm going to go for the Leappad 3, mainly because I don't have to do anything to make it kid friendly and the price is affordable.

I hope you haven purchased this yet?
Both my kids played with one of the demo ones at the store (9 and 2) and they liked it but as as we get home they go play with their androids - they both prefer the androids.

You can get a semi decent android tab for about R700 bucks now
