I would like to ask, what some may say is a dumb question!

Can software be installed on a tablet?

Can I use a tablet to display / update any of the following:
Word document
Excel spreadsheet
Powerpoint presentation

Or is it simply designed for e-mail, web & e-books

You'll have to look for specific type tablets.
To run MS office apps you'll need a Windows tablet that also satisfy the minimum hardware requirements.
The current Atom processors, that run many Windows tablets, is powerfull enough for MS office leaving the RAM and Hard drive/SSD space the most important factors. (Which most currently satisfy)
There is tablets with slightly larger sceensizes and those with dockable keyboards or flip screen types with keyboards (called convertibles) also if editing on those would be a bit easier.

You can install your programs four ways.
1. USB stick.
2. External DVD drive
3. Download via web
4. Folder on your PC via Wi-fi

Incorrect, you can display / edit word, excel and powerpoint files on both the iPad and Android tablets.

Windows 7 tablets are not a good option. Windows 7 was not designed for touch screen tablets and is a pain to use without a mouse and keyboard.

Yes you can - the iPad has over 60000 apps, of course you can install software on it. Yes there are Office apps for tablets too.

If you talking about normal windows Applications like Microsoft Office, no

If you talking about applications that does similar functions then yes, both Android and iOS have applications for all types of use. Example QuickOffice and Documents on the go can be used for editing and creating on both platforms. You can also access Things like Google Docs. There is also applications on both for creating an manipulating images/pictures.

Some tablets are even designed with the "netbook" user in mind like Asus Eee Pad transformer that has this Office apps pre installed and converts between tablet and Laptop with the use of a doc feature with mouse support. It also boasts USB host and SD card reader slots to move data to and from the device. With the new 3.1 update coming in July you will even be able to plug in a Xbox 360 controller to play games on it, and HDMI out means you will be able to plug it into your TV for watching movies.

I run a tablet with android and it runs freeken well. Well over 290 000 apps.

Android is also open source: http://source.android.com/

iPad and Android tablets have apps to open MS Office files. MS Office is still the best though, so if you need to work with Office stuff a lot while on the move a Windows laptop is still the best choice.
