Two executive committee members at the Central Drugs Authority, which guides government policy on substance abuse, say there is a pressing need to reduce the harm that liquor causes.

Writing in the SA Medical Journal, University of Cape Town psychiatrist Dan Stein and North West University drug expert Eva Manyedi say there is little evidence that criminalisation reduces substance abuse.

What and making drugs easier to obtain will lead to less drugies, what absolute nonsense.
 
Why must one end and another begin?

A Jedi must not deal in absolutes.
 
Will you two be the first to buy your children legal drugs? I mean if you cannot stop people from doing it then it must be right.

Your moral objection to drug use is irrelevant. The reality is that, legal or not, drugs are easy to purchase for anyone who wants to get them. For my children's sake I would far prefer drugs to be legal so that if or when they one day decide to experiment with them their lives are not going to be ruined by a failed punitive justice system that is going to criminalise them for something so trivial. The criminalisation of drug use has ruined far more lives than drugs themselves have ever done.

With some exceptions, including a marginal increase among adolescents, drug use has fallen over the past 15 years and now ebbs and flows within overall trends in Europe. Portuguese officials estimate that by the late 1990s roughly one percent of Portugal's population, around 100,000 people, were heroin users.
Today, "we estimate that we have 50,000, most of them under substitution treatment," said Goulão before adding that he's recently seen a small uptick in use of the drug, predominantly among former addicts that got clean. This reflects Portugal's tenuous economic condition, he contends.

Alcohol is a drug too. So it makes the thread title all wrong. How can you deal with one specific drug and ignore all the others?
