Tails 1.2 is out

My post was a bit short. Here is an overview from their site for those who have not encountered it before:

Tails is a live operating system, that you can start on almost any computer from a DVD, USB stick, or SD card. It aims at preserving your privacy and anonymity, and helps you to:

use the Internet anonymously and circumvent censorship; all connections to the Internet are forced to go through the Tor network;

leave no trace on the computer you are using unless you ask it explicitly;

use state-of-the-art cryptographic tools to encrypt your files, emails and instant messaging.

This was Snowden's favored operating system. It is carried on a USB stick which you boot from. Afterwards there is no trace of your session on the machine you used and what you do during the session can not be traced unless you get stupid.

Just out of interest, how is this any different from running any other linux Distro from a DVD, or memory stick?

I guess it is the same, it just has all of the privacy tools already installed and configured and presumably it doesn't "phone home".

Why would an average South African need to use this in South Africa?
