Unexpected product selling like hotcakes at Takealot

South Africa's largest online store, Takealot, has recently seen substantial demand for fuel-powered generators, while sales of battery and power station products have dwindled.

Demand for pure backup products has plummeted in South Africa since 2024, due to significantly reduced load-shedding.

The cost of generating electricity with a petrol generator is higher than what you would pay for electricity from the grid.

My 15 year old generator is still going strong and only requires the odd service every few years like a car. Now the ironic thing is that I plan to buy an electric car to do away with petrol. I can power my house with petrol and drive my car with electricity.
