Taking action against screamers

Fair enought - I'm using this thread as a vent for digichill (someone before me forked the thread that way) and I have no experience with screamer.

I have also stated that while i got maybe 5 gigs downloaded (probably more 3) for the entire month of december, others have downloaded 51 gigs..

Sorry for semi-hijacking and ****ting up your screamer thread, but I place both ISP's in the same category..

hey no problem - it aint my thread anyway.:)
I have been a customer of both - DC and Screamer. DC in December and Screamer in Jan. So have some experience on both.
DC really sucked in the early part of December but ended the month on a high and I ended up downloading almost 12g of data that month. Incidentally I was getting close to line speed on a spicy package.

Dont know if DC subscriber numbers are higher - and they might be due their lower subscription - but their thread seems to attract a lot more comments than the screamer one.

Whether thats a reflection of greater issues or just the higher sub count or just greater activism amongst their subs - I dont know. So it might be a bit unfair to lump both in the same bracket. (not that it affects me - its not like I am employed by them).

Rome wasnt built in a day
These companies have just started up. There is no way that they are going to set up and be up an running 100% on all fronts from Day 1.
This takes time.

Ideally they would have started with all their processes mapped out, documented and tested. But that will not always be the case - maybe for a Vodacom or MTN - yes.

This is a startup - with limited resources. They also would not be able to have a 6 month test phase - that would just bankrupt them - and they need cash flow to survive.

Perhaps Screamer could take a leaf out of the DigiChilli book, and offer a discount to all their users - except maybe increase the discount percentage to 40% - with no guarantees/service levels/uptime - for a 3 month period.

That would allow them some cash flow and allow users to test their network rigorously - kill 2 birds at the same time. Potentially happy users and constructive feedback from users. No whingeing/whining.

After 3/6 months - network is more stable - cancel discount. Business as usual.

Maybe Rome wasnt built in a day, but screamer have been around for LONG time offering this product on wireless(wimax and wifi), same **** different connection

My connection is still flying and you just have to respect the fact that they are TRYING to give us cheap internet

If I may stick my pretty little nose in here...

There is a right way and a wrong way to launch a network. DigiChilli and Screamer did it the wrong way. DigiChilli launched without any real stress testing. I haven't been following Screamer but I assume they did the same.

Another ISP is also busy launching a network: Web Africa. At first they tested strenuously. 8000 users were each given 10GB international bandwidth. Then a large number of users were given local bandwidth. This allowed them to find issues and see what the network needed- incidentally how the news server came about. They have slowly migrated their current clients to their network, offered hosting on the network and will eventually offer bandwidth on the network. It has taken a while but at every step they listened to their clients and fine-tuned performance. That is the right way to do something.

So for all the guys who are saying "Rome wasn't built in a day," look at Web Africa's approach. They built their network slowly and cautiously and when the ADSL portion launches it will most probably be near perfect. As much as I hate SAOL, I have to admit they did a similar thing. They launched a product and obviously had the foresight to know it would work.

Before you start sending the PMs let me just say I don't work for Web Africa. I do however have an IS local account with them but that's beside the point:)

I would forgive anything and support every and any attempt to improve our present bandwidth situation , however what I would not accept is being bul****ted and Screamers not taking responsibility for the mess-up they created. For them not to pay the customers back for a service not received, is very simply theft.

These companies have it all wrong and I still don't get how people are paying to be testing their network.

It's insane - well maybe not insane, but it sure as hell doesn't make sense.

It's already been stated here, but WA has gone about checking their network in the right manner. And that should be some kind of status quo for the rest of the market that want to expand.

Really, at this rate I don't see DC sticking out much longer (in my mind they shouldn't be anyway) - but they'll likely just re-brand themselves and come back with another name
They've already done so (Screamer=DC).
So nothing stopping them from having another go.
