I've had a few Cell-C customers in already this season:

Their new Cell-C high speed data modem doesn't work in Stilbaai and in many cases neither do their cellphones!

We have HSPA+ on both MTN & Vodacom but sadly, not even 2G Cell-C tower!

Now I'm not sure if this is a Cell-C problem or a Vodacom problem, but in theory a Cell-C SIM should roam onto Vodacom 2.5G or EDGE. This doesn't happen and even though on some 3G handsets there will be a valid signal showing - nothing works! The problem is the Cell-C SIM seems to roam onto Vodacom 3G (instead of 2.5G) but that's as far as it gets, no data or voice calls are possible!

Simple cure is to set the device in EDGE mode or GSM only mode depending on what device you are using. Do not leave it on automatic!!

It's probably worth taking a Vodacom SIM with you if you want higher speeds that 2.5G. You can bring MTN as well but you'll only get 3G in Stilbaai itself and MTN's fallback speed is GPRS not EDGE!

This situation might well apply to other holiday locations??

I hope this will save some of you a WTF moment! :)

Reading your headline, my first response was "but Cell C is always on holiday - why would you want to take them with you?"

Sorry, couldn't help myself, especially after the complete lack of service from them over the past two weeks. Not a single response my e-mails or calls. Nada! :(
