So my brother took out a Telkom contract yesterday. And he wants to take out one for his son, is it too soon for him to go to Telkom again for another one?

No it's fine, so long as his credit record is good and he can afford it, there's no problem with mobile contracts. Multiple short-term loans taken out close together are a warning sign for lenders however.

That's cool. I assumed he'd have to make a few monthly payments first before he can go to them again.

Is this his first ever contract? Once you've got a long credit history with multiple providers, that is taken into account by lenders every bit as much as their personal history with you. In fact it is good to sometimes get a second contract soon after a first ... I did that through Vodacom where I got a contract for myself, and when I went back a month later to get the same contract for my wife, they told me I didn't need to submit any new documents because everything I'd given them last time was still valid. Just clicked a few buttons, contract approved, easy-peasy.

He has one with mtn that it ends in October. That's his only debt in history plus the Telkom one.

Depends on his credit score but very possible.

Update: He went to one of those mobile kioskis at the malls and got approved on the spot. But he'll have two wait two weeks for his device. Who knew P30 lites are so hard to get.

When I took out an MTN contract years ago possibly 2014/2015, they said I qualify for upto R2000 more in addition to the contract I had applied for, so they definitely have some sort of affordability check they run. If I wanted a few more contracts I could have taken them out there and then, but obviously that's a bad idea

how old is his son? imo i would make sure it is a top up contract or else stick him on prepaid.

I have finally ditched my contracts, i use wifi everywhere and have afrihost mobile data, i rarely call people but they steal my airtime every month, eff that i will now just top up when i need to.
