An executive council task team has been established in the Madibeng local municipality to root out corruption, North West premier Thandi Modise said on Thursday.

The team, which consisted of several MECs, would ensure that investigations into nepotism, fraud and corruption at municipalities in the province were concluded speedily, Modise said in a statement.

"Where obstruction and resistance are encountered, exco [executive committee] will not hesitate to dissolve municipalities in terms of Section 139(1)c of the Constitution," she said.

"There will be no compromise with those who have benefited in any way from corruption. Where fraud and corruption are uncovered, properties will be attached and people sent to jail."

The team was expected to present a progress report in two weeks.

Madibeng's mayor Poppy Mangongwa and two other officials -- chief whip Solly Malete and speaker Buti Makhongela -- resigned on Tuesday.

"There was no reason given for their resignation," municipality spokeswoman Lebogang Tsogang said at the time.

The new mayor was Matshidiso Mangoathe, the new chief whip was Simon Klaas, and the new speaker was Douglas Maimane.

Four people died in Mothutlung, near Brits, last week, during violent protests against a water shortage.

In nearby Hebron, residents had been complaining about service delivery and called for the resignation of their ward councillor. They claimed the councillor neither listened to them nor addressed their grievances.

That's odd, I heard they were recalled by the ANC.

Amazing what a little election can do to light a fire under a political party, the NW has been a cesspit of corruption and incompetence for as long as the ANC have ruled the province. I remember the one time carte blanche showed a program where the local residents association had to pay for a municipality's postal rental and deliver letters/cheques to the municipal manager's office, such was the incompetence of the guy that they had no money because no one bothered to ensure the mail was being delivered/collected.

Yup, the amount of rot there is ridiculous. It's already a relatively poor province and the ANC administration there is immensely corrupt.
