Tata Nexon to launch in South Africa as ‘Osprey’

The Tata Nexon is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the 3rd quarter of 2026, though the Indian brand’s local division says it will be badged as the Osprey…

- Local launch planned for Q3 2026
- Engine details not yet confirmed

At the start of 2026, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa confirmed plans to launch the Nexon in Mzansi. Now, however, the Indian brand’s local division has announced that the crossover will be badged as the “Osprey” in the local market.

Set to arrive in the 3rd quarter of the year, the sub-4-metre crossover will likely slot in between the Punch and the Harrier. Though the company hasn’t said why it’s adopted this “unique naming convention” for the local market, it’s interesting to note the Nexon’s internal codename ahead of its global reveal back in 2016 was Osprey.

For the record, the Nexon is by no means a new model, with production having started in India way back in 2017. However, this small crossover received facelifts in both 2020 and 2023, with this latest version destined for Mzansi’s roads – albeit wearing a fresh badge (ostensibly inspired by the bird of prey of the same name).

Though Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles SA hasn’t yet confirmed powertrain details for the local market, the front-wheel-drive Nexon is available in India with the same turbocharged 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine (88 kW and 170 Nm) as used in the Curvv. A 1.5-litre turbodiesel motor (85 kW and 260 Nm) is also offered in the world’s most populous nation, as is a fully electric powertrain.

Tata Osprey compact SUV heading to SA – will it be the brand's best seller?

Although Tata Motors has yet to penetrate the market with the same force as some of its Indian and Chinese counterparts, the brand is slowly expanding its footprint, and the new product you see here will be instrumental to its success.

The Indian brand returned to South Africa in 2025 with the Tigao compact hatch, as well as the Punch, Curvv and Harrier SUV models.

Next in line is the Osprey, which wears Nexon badging in most other markets. It is due to hit showrooms in the third quarter of 2026, and don't be surprised if this becomes the brand's best seller.

Pricing and range details will only be made available closer to launch, but with the newcomer measuring 3,995mm in length, it is set to slot between the Punch and Curvv, likely competing with turbocharged versions of the Nissan Magnite and Chery's entry-level Tiggo 4 derivatives.

For the record, the Punch is priced from R244,900 to R339,900 and the Curvv kicks off at R349,900, so it's a reasonable assumption that the Osprey could start below the R300,000 mark.

The local engine line-up has yet to be confirmed, but in its home market the Osprey is offered with an 88kW 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, as well as an 84kW 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, powering the front wheels in both cases.

Tata Osprey compact SUV: SA launch date confirmed

Tata has confirmed the Osprey will launch in SA in the coming months. Here is everything you need to know…

In a bid to bolster its local passenger-car portfolio, Tata Motors has confirmed the Osprey compact SUV, known as the Nexon overseas, will arrive in SA in the coming months. Along with the Sierra, the Osprey is one of 17 new Tata products set to arrive in our market over the next few years.

The Osprey is available with the choice of three engine options. The first comes in the form of a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, producing 85 kW and 260 N.m of torque. The latter, ‘Revotorq’ motor is mated with either a six-speed manual or an automated manual transmission (AMT) with the same number of cogs. The petrol variant employs the Indian automaker’s ‘Revotron’ 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbopetrol, developing 88 kW and 170 N.m. The turbo-triple can be had with either a five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed AMT, or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A ‘Revotron CNG Bi-fuel’ engine is also available in India. Coupled with a six-speed manual, the latter powertrain pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with a compressed natural gas (CNG) kit, and delivers 74 kW and 170 N.m.

The Osprey features LED headlamps and daytime-running lights. Inside, the Osprey is fitted with a two-spoke steering wheel, replete with an illuminated Tata emblem, ventilation for the synthetic leather front seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system by Harman, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and Connected Vehicle technology via IRA 2.0, which allows owners to access and monitor their car using their mobile phones. Safety items include an electronic stability programme (ESP), six airbags, 360-degree surround-view camera supplemented by park distance sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. The five-seater compact SUV offers a claimed 382 litres of boot space.
