I was employed full time till sept 2024 then started a contract position in jan 2025. I believe that I fall under the category of independent contractor now and must register for provisional tax. For my 2025 tax return( 1 march 2024 - 28 feb 2025) I was employed both as a permanent and contractor. I need to submit my tax return but dont know how to go about doing it. I have been doing my tax return myself the last few years with no issues. There should already be a tax return pre-populated with all my info except for the 2 months when I was contracting. Can I add this income on the same tax return or do I need to submit another tax return for provisional tax?

I am full time employed, and an independent contractor as well. You use the same return. It's a mission and I have someone help me do it. I usually get tax deducted from IC work (But it's at 25%) then SARS takes your entire income amount meaning your tax should be higher for IC work. Deductions etc help, but I always end up owing them from the 25% tax deducted instead of 39% or whatever.

Then theres all the rest. Equipment, depreciation, claims etc. So a lot of invoices need to be provided, as well as the Excel spreadsheet with all calculation. It is not a simple process. If you earned without paying tax on IC work, that will also need to be declared and taxed.

Be prepared to be audited as well, cause it's coming.

You have missed 2 deadlines already.
You were supposed to register as a provisional tax payer before 28 Feb 2025 and pay an estimated tax amount on your additional income.
Then also before 31 August 2025.. Next one is due 28 Feb 2026.
Note that you will have to pay in (potentially with interest and penalties) when you submit your return.

So far as I am aware, the process of registering as a provisional taxpayer has been done away with. What you must do is to request an IRP6 on EFiling, and fill it out.

Can I add this income on the same tax return or do I need to submit another tax return for provisional tax?

You just update the return (ITR12) to add the other income.

There is no separate income tax return for provisional taxpayers. There is just the addition of the IRP6, which you need to file in January and again in August.

But you also say you "believe that" you are an independent contractor. Just check on that as well because SARS may disagree.
