We don't have a choice, this is Africa isn't it? or did we suddenly become Utopia?

Yes you do have a choice - by paying a bribe you simply entrench a corrupt system and in fact encourage the corrupt official.

It certainly isn't a utopia but if everyone simply refused to pay bribes coruption would be eradicated. By paying you're as corrupt as the person asking for the backhand.

couldn't agree more

The @ssholes who offer the bribes are worse that the people accepting it.

The system needs more control. There must be more evidence collected and not be "erasable", and no way to squash fines like everyone seems to be able to get done. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

guys we live in a country where our cops are paid peanuts

i would also take bribes if i got paid next to nothing

this is a corrupt country either get with it or move away from it

If people stop paying bribes then that form of corruption disappears. That is change.

So go through life being part of the problem - but you forfeit the right to any meaningful complaint.

*sigh* This is like that whole speeding argument from a while back. Participating in a bribe (either as recipient or giver) is illegal. You are a criminal if you offer a bribe. The End.

{*sigh*} It's only against the law if you get caught;)

Lighten up, we'd be foolish to think that a handfull of dogooders could change the corrupt system that is our country.

I'd prefer to see the cops et al use their resources to catch the serious offenders rather than give me a ticket for doing 70.000001 in a 60 zone but that's just me.

the only way to rip corruption my friends is to increase their pay

and i never offer a bride, how dumb would i have to be to offer

Maybe i would offer some money - depends on the circumstances.

Have you ever thought that the officer would take the money and buy some food for his family or put it towards his childrens school books?

I dont see it as corruption - i see it as helping one another

JUST MY OPINION -

tks

Yep - I can understand this - especially when our so-called leaders seem to be the biggest beneficiaries of 'backhands' they must think "...well if it's good enough for JZ why not for me?....". Despite that bribery remains inexcusable.

As for the '...it will cost me less ' argument - well yes in the short term perhaps ; but in the long term you will be contributing to a problem that will cost you and everyone else far more . If you can't see that then you're fracked.

Hmmm, if I had a choice of "going down to the station" or paying a bribe?

;)

Lets just say I'd had a drink over the limit - we're not talking drunk, but just a bit over the legal limit.

The cop says "well, you can come down the station, I can book you, chuck you in a cell with criminals for the night ... " OR

"pay me R150 and go home"

Not really much of a choice is it?

Of course, if you have never driven a car a few over the limit, then you have nothing to worry about and so would never need to make a bribe. You are a good, honest citizen - in fact, you are reliable, caring, cautious etc.

Swings and roundabouts.

Don't ever consider yourself morally good until you've really faced a situation where your life either turns upside down, or you bribe a cop.

Now, having said that, there ARE common limits to this - if you've been involved in an accident, it's your fault and someone else is injured, heck, you aint exactly going to bribe anyone unless your a total asswipe.

Corruption like this doesn't exist because people bribe, it exists because the policing is not effective, because the police are not paid enough and are demoralised.

Let me tell you a certain truth - I don't care how moral and just you think you are, it's a human trait to try to get out of a sticky situation and if you can get out of it with less damage to yourself (so long as others are not hurt), you will - don't kid yourselves otherwise.

Fact is, the cops in SA get paid peanuts, so anything extra they can get, heck - who cares - they crims they are faced with don't ... ;)
