We were there! The idiot taxi that caused the crash came zooming past us at 140-150.
5min later we see there's commotion up ahead. People were strewn over the road dying and spazzing. Not so great.

30min past the accident 2 more taxis came past us going at least 140. These guys are truly idiots and won't change their behavior in the face of death.

There was a leg lying in the road! It's as close to a battle field as I think you can get. If that doesn't knock some sense into you nothing will. The one taxi was one of those old 1980 Toyota's, his indicators weren't working so whenever he changed lanes he would throw his hand outside showing he's changing lanes. At first we thought he was drunk and was doing a dolphin riding the waves, later only realizing this idiot is doing it to show he's changing lanes. In the dark.

The only thing that will force a change in behaviour is to actually enforce the traffic laws properly.. across the board and not just for the soft targets like us.

Taxi's should actually be held to a higher standard since they're "Public Transport"

And the funny thing.. this morning on the radio, government said people must change their driving habits to bring down the death toll. Yea.. with cops patrolling for kfc money, taxis driving like idiots.. good luck that idea.

Charge them with murder and put them in jail for a minimum of 25 years per life they cost. These fkers have no respect for life and limb and are a law unto themselves. They get away with every traffic violation under the sun and only when people die is attention drawn to them.

I blame the current government for this because since they have been in power the lawlessness on the roads has escalated to an extreme where it becomes the norm.

I don't want to hear some fat FvK MP saying we are sad for this loss and we must........ FvK you!!! You have lost control and time to step down and give the reins to someone who have the people and the peoples interests at heart.

This.

I was a taxi driver in the 70's...not the mini bus type but proper private taxis...Was paying my own way through college then..
Point I want to raise was that we then had very strict inspectors when applying for licenses and same process with PDP.
Vehicles were tested to most stringent standards and needed to cleaned and washed on a daily basis...
I drove a Valiant Rebel....lovely car!

+1. It is tragic how lackluster controls are around public transport that has Government as a regulatory body. You see the same with trains as well, where people hang off carriages due to overcrowding or "surf" on the roof

The "original" driver, good to see one of you.

Anyways, the problem is, back then you cared about the people you were transporting and the state of your vehicle, now it's all about profits, how many times they can send a driver out to do a route.

The owners need to take responsibility here too as they are the ones pushing the drivers to make as many trips as possible and give a schnitzel about the state of the vehicle.

Hierdie!

I once made an offer on here for any volunteers to take taxi with me, just to observe.

From the early morning when the driver fetches the vehicle from the owner its a rush. He needs to make a set amount of money per day, failing that he's told to not come back the next day.

I don't know of a single owner who drives one of his own vans.

I'd say 75% of the problem lies with the owner.

Taxi's have to be taken for roadworthy once every year, but all that happens is the owner will slip a grand into someone's hand at the testing station and the vehicle is passed...without the tester ever seeing the vehicle.Again, owner's fault.

The law abiding testing stations are few and far between and they do a hell of a good job lately.

I had to come to this here forum a few weeks ago to ask WTF a "torsion bush" was because they failed me as one of mine was worn. Upon replacing both, to my untrained eye the old ones looked exactly like the new ones - but that's beside the point :)

I was overseas recently, the same still applies there. Each one has to have a permit, and has a certificate stating the government checked it for roadworthiness, etc..
