Remember that business about Multi-drug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis and Extensively-drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis?

Well the inevitable just happened: The newest strain is completely resistant to everything we've got. Only thing still working is experimental drugs with horrific side-effects (nerve damage etc). Also...100% mortality.

High five to all the useless doctors out there handing out anti-biotics like candy.

Looks like the world is in for one hell of a rough ride & judging by SA's handling of TB so far we'll have front row seats to this train-wreck. :(

I guess the most positive spin one can put on this would involve a phoenix somehow.

I thought drug-resistant strains develop due to patients not completing their treatments. So how are doctors to be blamed?

That too yes. Patients fcking this up is expected though.

The doctors are responsible because they fail to stick to protocol when it comes to first line drugs vs 2nd line. Getting that right is crucial exactly because patients don't complete their treatments & in general can't be relied on. Doctors on the other hand should theoretically known TB treatment 101.

List of stuff that *might* still work for TDR TB is over here. Mighty sketchy stuff though which is why they didn't make it onto the WHO list for 1st line & 2nd line.
