Teaching a kid to drive

Get him a Bike. Let him learn the clutch, throttle and gear sequence. Once he has that down, applying it to a car is simple as fark. I learned on a Motorbike when I was about 4 years old, given it only had 2 gears. I was driving a tractor at age 8 and driving car at about 10.

Agreed with all the previous posts mentioning learning to drive a manual and especially learning to "drive" on a motorbike if possible.

As a driver once you understand and have a feel for the machinery that you are using, navigating becomes natural and relatively easy.

Teach him the two most important rules:

1. Teach him how to park.

2. Show him where the fog lights are so he remembers to drive with them switched off.

Rear foglights off under normal conditions, but definitely on in actual fog.
Front foglights can be on any time in my opinion. It makes the vehicle far more visible from the front and are usually low enough to not bother anyone. Rear foglights are like high beams at the back of your car.

Also teach him to switch off the high beam (or brights if you want) at night when there's traffic in front of him.

I won't be getting him a bike in order to teach him clutch control.

I'll take him out on the road on Sunday in the manual. There's some huge parking lots in Brackenfell. There are quite a few driving schools practicing in the parking lot just past the McDonalds.

Do both, that way he gets used to driving different cars as well. Then also send him for a few lessons so they teach him the proper order of mirror checking etc. that you've forgotten by now.
