I know of Europeans & Americans currently teaching ESL in Vietnam & China with only a Diploma, TEFL qualification and no prior teaching experience. Are there any agencies in South Africa that cater for such people?

Given that China and Vietnam both require a degree to teach, I would run far away from any agencies that will 'assist' you and claim otherwise.

You want some free jail with that vacation*? Thats how to get some.


*Vacation, as without the legal requirements for a work permit, you are going to be working illegally on a tourist visa, and subject to other countries laws, who may take a dim view of your antics.
 
Only place you can legally do it is Cambodia and they are starting to become stricter too. A degree is needed for any legal teaching work in almost all of Asia. South America is still an option though.

Agencies you will find, definitely. But if the country is not so accommodating and only have teaching post available in the local prison we won't be able to assist. They don't offer a free call and internet.

Don't you follow the news if you are interested in something? Or did you miss the recent issue? OR do you believe that you can dodge the bullet?
 
In my experience, the degree requirement is to satisfy visa formalities in the particular country and has little to no bearing on the actual qualification for the teaching post.

It has zero bearing on the qualification, I know many who have Diplomas and TEFL certificates that are currently teaching in Vietnam and China. Some even photoshop their diplomas to indicate a degree, they don't even get verified, certainly a visa formality. Anywho, I got the contacts that I need.
 
For China a degree is a requirement.

I know somebody that had to flee China with other "teachers" when the person had been convinced that a degree was not a requirement and that other qualifications with experience were good enough.

The person had worked through a "reputable" agency and a good Chinese school.

The media reports from earlier this year as to why foreign teachers are being arrested in China are accurate (for once).
