A friend and i do a lot of webwork together and as we live on opposite ends of a town we spend numerous hours in VOIP chats, until recently skype has been extremely reliable, but with recent connectivity problems i started looking for alternates, as we both bank with FNB jumping onto their connect service was easy, but for some reason it keep dropping the calls around 48 seconds, even when i called the FNB helpdesk.

I remembered Telkom was running their own TS Server so i had him download TS as i already had it on my machine.
No firstly he has a strange setup, he has wrapped his headset around his monitor stand leaving the mic facing forward, and normally this would generate a lot of feedback, especially with his speakers being 5.1, but up until we started using TeamSpeak there was no feedback at all, we retried skype and fnbconnect afterwards and neither of them generate any feedback on my voice.

So whats basically confusing me is whats different that under almost identical conditions only 1 f 3 applications is generating voice feedback. I find the latency and quality of TS to be far superior to that of skype and FNB and would prefer to use it in future instead of skype, but unless i can get rid of the feedback i would much prefer skype once seacoms sorted again.

Also anyone know of how to make skype work with local only, i use mweb and as soon as the seacom link breaks i loose all connection to skype, i know with IS at a stage that skype could work with their local only accounts when actually on local only, but is their like a proxy address or a hosts file modification that would force skype through a local route, if it exists.

Thanks.

Hi,

Feedback can usually be eliminated by "Muting" the Microphone on output volumes. The recording side can be what you want. This prevents the microphone from generating feedback. As for the Teamspeak, you will need to setup a Teamspeak Local server to get it to work across local bandwidth. I am not sure about the costs, but it depends on the amount of users you will have connecting to it.

What version of TS are you using. In The gaming community TS is a must! TS2 had a quality problem and a lot of fine tuning was needed. But with teamspeak 3 its much less. Dogaming is currently hosting TS3 server. I dont see how TS would be able to replace Skype as its more made for a confrence call type of voip calls. Where a group of people can chat with minimal delay(with TS3). The feedback that i have found is the settings on TS. You need to edit it in TS so that the playback sound is set to high. If it is you get the feedback. Its just a matter of getting the output volume right on you TS settings on client side.

There are currently a whole gaming community thats using TS3 with major online leagues. And in FPS games response times are key and it needs to be clear 2.

Basicly its just your client side settings that you need to tweak to get the output volume that it doenst feedback.

Regards
Daniel

Using TS3 Beta 22, not really trying to replace skype as a whole but as we currently only doing 1 on 1 chats TS works a bit better with the reduced latency and apparent higher quality, especially with the seacom troubles.

I figured it was a setting, but after using skype i never really considered the volume to be a factor, but it makes sense as TS's volume control seems to be independant of the system volume were as skype is identical, adjusting the 1 would work as well as adjusting the other and if TS appears to work independently.

Will give it a try and report back.

Not to be a pain in the ass - but a mic wrapped around a screen, with speakers around it ?
Dit is moeilikheid soek !
I would recommend testing the setup with headsets both sides - will help quite a bit.. seeing as the issue is probably 'voice gain' in the application used.
My BFBC2 clan has a TS setup, and we all use headsets - except one guy.. with same setup as your buddy - any sound engineer will tell you its a no-go !
Especially if his room acoustic is dodgy.

I presume he is using that setup, because :
a) Its too expensive to get a headset
b) It's uncomfortable to have a headset on for so long (I can comprehend this one)

Answers for both a and b would be a decent headset - its something good to fork out for... trust me !
I previously had this shoddy R100 headset, saved up for a month or three - and then got a Logitech Clearchat Pro - no turning back ! Excellent comfort and sound quality..
my 2c obviously..

Agreed, doggy setup, money is not the issue though, he moves around too much so a headset is constricting also he still has an old case so there is no front panel audio connectors so the headsets audio is not even connected.
As for the headset its some R350 creative set, trust me it has the quality and comfort, its just too inconvenient for him to use it as a headset. Also as i said the feedbacks only when using TS, we chat for a few hours daily using skype and the noticed it for the first time after the very first sentence i spoke via TS

I found Xfire better than TS.

Local bandwidth being the operative word - Xfire is not an option ;-)
Even though it is a excellent platform - with that I cannot disagree

Point taken... WIRELESS Clearchat Pro +/- R900 ;-)

SEACOMS back up 100% so until South Africa lives up to its reputation its back to skype. I Also managed to fix FNB's Connect gadget. Not sure whats specifically the problem but i called 1 fo their help desks last night and even then with the internet in full swing again it keeps dropping the call at 48 seconds.

I pulled out my 3rd party app again and called the same help desk number, spent 5min on hold and another 3 min talking to the consultant so clearly the fault lies with the FNB Software, it may be compatibility issues with 64bit I'm not sure, but i assume as the problem is there that not many clients have complained about it.

Once i get him a copy of eyeBeam then we can use the local links instead of skype for a slightly smoother conversation.
