Teen's blue bottle brush with death

Cape Town - A Cape Town teen had a brush with death after having a severe allergic reaction to a blue bottle sting while swimming at Witsand on Saturday.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that rescue volunteers had rushed to Anchorage main swimming beach after receiving a call for medical assistance.

"An 18-year-old male, believed to be a matriculant from Cape Town, had been stung by blue bottles while swimming with friends," he said.

"The teen was found on the beach in a serious condition and he was treated for an allergic reaction to blue bottle stings," Lambinon added.

He said that a doctor, driving past the scene at the time, stopped to assist.

"The patient was handed into the care of EMS paramedics and transported to hospital in a stable condition."

If he does not know it yet then he's possibly allergic to jellyfish & bee stings as well. The toxin/venom of all three might have the same effect on an individual but this is not always the case. I'm one of the unlucky ones allergic to a three of them.

And of course every one around me with ideas on what could help, everything from olive oil, peeing on it, vinegar to diesel.

Hot water took away most of it.

hmmm, wonder what the theory was behind all of them.

Apparently warm, salty, water is your best bet. Fresh water aggravates the tentacles and releases more of the toxin. My poor pup stepped in one on the beach recently, some warm salt water, anti-histamine and plenty of love saw her back to normal in an hour or so.

The salt water is to rinse away most of the unfired nematocysts, vinegar or diluted ammonia help to deactivate the remaining nematocysts, hot soak (as hot as you can handle) after all the previous treatments will break down the toxins in the localised area of your body where you got stung.
