Telcos join together against Telstra
Phil Sweeney | 2005-Nov-18, 1:15 pm | Australia
UPDATED | Australian Telcos have banded together in a unprecedented attack against Telstra through the media.

Seven of Australia's largest telecommucations companies launched a full page advertisement in The Australian today, with the headline "Stand up for competition. And stand up to Telstra."

AAPT, iiNet, Macquarie Telecom, Optus, PowerTel, Primus and Soul (formerly SP Telemedia) are represented in the ad.

"Telstra has been running a concerted campaign of attacking the regulation of telecommunications for several months", said Paul Fletcher, Director Optus Corporate and Regulatory Affairs.

"Today's advertisement highlights the flaws in Telstra's arguments — and suggests that Telstra's real motivation is to resist competition."

Federal Treasurer Peter Costello also weighed in on the issue yesterday, telling Telstra to move on. "There is no point in complaining about the regime all the time. They are the rules of the game, and the company has to work within it," he told AAP.

But a Telstra spokeperson called the advert "very predictable". "If accessing Telstra's network is so expensive, why do they prefer to use our networks rather than their own", he asked.

"The ad is a desperate measure and a sign these guys are starting to worry that Australians are starting to realise these companies are profiting at the expense of Australian jobs and infrastructure investment.

"Telstra would be very happy if we could play by some of the rules AAPT (Telecom NZ) has entrenching its incumbent position in NZ (i.e. no ULL access to competitors at all). It's laughable they would put their name and logo to this campaign under these circumstances."

Now thats the way its done folks. Looks like the Aussie competitors, regulator and government refuse to take crap from the incumbent.
