I heard about the term telecommuting where people work from home often using internet connections. Its a really cool idea since you can work from home and save a lot on travelling and food costs.

Are there jobs like this in SA. I can see a lot of job titles that could be converted to telecommuting jobs, data capturers, Sales, Marketing, Desktop Support, developers etc etc. All you need is a PC and an internet connection to a company VPN. With Dobroadband 1Gig at R200 it works out a lot cheaper than travelling.

Why don't we have a lot of this in SA. Or will the taxi drivers rip out ADSL lines if this starts happening :rolleyes:

I've been telecommuting since I arrived in SA 12 years ago. The commute to London would have been a major pain otherwise. :)

I've done it a couple of times. Usually companies don't really advertise the work from home concept, but if you press them or when you get the job, they allow you the luxury.

It is slowely catching on, especially in the consulting fields

Do you not eat at home?

Yeah but the problem is getting hungry later in the morning and at lunch time. Instead of eating sandwiches having an early bite of supper or making a fresh sandwhich at home is better.

Yes, a lot of the more progressive employers do allow it.

Free Business idea::D

Maybe there is a need for an employment agency specializing in telecommuting. The agency can take care of everything from making sure candidates are suitable and ensuring that they have the necessary infrastructure in place etc etc.

Anyone wanna try it, it could make money for someone to start this. I would start one but I have no knowledge about HR and personell and wouldnt know where to start.

You just tell the people that get the jobs that they must be productive or else they get the sack. Set them targets and they have to achieve those targets or face discipline. It does work overseas it seems.

I've also worked like this for about 3 years - the advantage is that one can get paid well and still live far away from the city (I moved to the west coast when I started telecommuting).

I'm sure we can all figure out what brown bag means, we're not 3 years old.

Now if you'd said tea bagging I would've been very concerned.

I was telecommunicating for like a year with my previous job. It worked out quite nicely except that the uncertainty of money got a bit much for us.
