Telecoms skills stagnate while demand soars

Nah, there is a critical shortage of companies willing to pay for the requisite skills.

These are internationally marketable skills, and if you won't pay the rates the internationals are paying you won't get candidates...

SA is bloody bad at this if you ask me.
 
All of them complain but still on a high pedestal when it comes to 'hiring the right candidate'. I've met more than my fair share of brilliant people who weren't hired because they're either bad at interviews or the wrong colour. Same drivel, different day.

Yeap, show a company willing to pay me what other people with equivalent 4 year science degrees then we will be in business.
 
Is it that bad? This isn't great news for someone that just started a first year BSc CS degree.
 
Surely if there is a shortage in Telecoms then salaries should go up? I got promoted and still only got a 5.5 percent increase this last year. How is that for a thank you.

I fully agree with you.

On the next level (below the engineers) you have the qualified technicians. Who is currently training these technicians. In the past Telkom had an apprenticeship system but this has long since been stopped.

While it is all fine and well to employ engineers, you still need techies who get their hands dirty. And this is where SA falls horribly short.
