Telecoms skills war

It is my hope that South African companies do better to attract and retain talented individuals. I really would love to see that - it would make my world brighter. The recent move by Investec to set its minimum salary to R21K a month was a good move (assuming it includes everyone regardless of qualification(s) and experience) - if I was working at Investec, I would have definitely clapped at the move.

In my opinion, a good number of SA companies don't want to do their part in keeping talented people happy, so I don't feel bad for their "struggle in finding talent". I hope they continue with their "struggle". I understand that many of the issues mentioned in the article aren't SA company specific - some issues are prevalent in companies all over the world. However, given SA's brain drain, you would think such organizations would do their best in attracting and holding onto talented people... clearly not.

BEE comes to mind.
Cant employ the best talent there fore they leave the country.

Other problem is, everyone wants the best skilled people, but they are lagging so far behind in upskilling people their little pyramid is going to implode sooner, rather than later.

Plus, local companies pay 3-4 times less than the US, for niche skills.

Agreed, BEE affirmative action and “ for the greater good” are forcing skilled people to take there skills elsewheret

There are a lot of Baby boomer best skilled people out there to close the skills gap or to transfer knowledge to the new generation but due to ageism and BEE are discriminated against and to make it worse recruitment agencies that do not even read past the birthdate.
