Why would one cost more than another?

There's no IS (I think) and no aperture (I think) - is it purely the glass quality?

I was checking a few sites and see they were between R2,000.00 - R3,000.0 ... but now I've seen another new one on a classad for R6,0000.00?

Within the same series (ie I, II, III) the costs are generally the same for the 1.4x and 2x canon tc's.

The main difference is probably the optics and the electronics. The newer ones are supposed to AF faster and more accurately with the new series of lenses being released.

It's kind of funny that they charge more for the longer extension tubes but not for the longer tc.

Would you recommend a TC for a 70-200mm F2.8?

No noticable quality loss?

I'm aware one two stops lower - but starting at 2.8 should be good, from what I read

Definitely the 1.4x, not so much the 2x unless it's the new 70-200 f/2.8 mkII

It is the new MKII ...

And the converter will be a MKII as well.

So then 2x is good?

I must admit, the thought of a 640mm F4 equivilant is very tempting ...

70-200 f/2.8+2x tc on a 1.6 crop? That's a f/5.6

Yup - that'll work, right?
And I'm guessing at f4, the AF etc will still all work?

EDIT : 640mm f5.6

The AF will work fine with f/5.6.
AF only becomes a real problem when you hit f/8 - then you need one of the higher end EOS bodies for AF to work.

Here is a nice table of lenses with Canon "extenders" that will tell you what the final F-stop is for a lens/TC combination and whether IS and AF will work or not.

I spent a fair amount of time over the weekend using both MkII teleconverters on the 70-200MkII and was impressed with how well it worked.

That does look good, I purchased a 2nd hand Sigma 1.4x TC to extend the range on my 70-200. It's the non DG version but I managed to get it for R1150 which I thought was pretty good.

I need to find the time to give it a test run.

A lot of pixel-peepers write off teleconverters but I'm a huge fan of them.

Damn this thread. It's making me want a 70-200 and TC.
I'm not about to ditch my 300mm but for day to day they're a great combo :)

I did manage a few shots with the 300mm + a 1.4tc though :)
