As part of their back to school specials Pick n Pay is selling this 7 inch Android tablet for R1299

The model number 7A3GEA is SA only model number so hard to find reviews on it.

Thats damn cheap even just for a play thing e.g. Surfing in bed or ebook reader.
 
Hifi corp had the wifi version for R999 in December.

I doubt it is worth it. I've tried several cheap Android tablets (not this one though) and they are all flawed in some way or another (or many).

Edit: same version, the Hifi corp one was just white. Note you need an "external 3G dongle" for 3G even though it is described as having one.

Saw an ad on TV that PC Training and Business College are now providing the tablet for free preloaded their course material.
I would never study there just find it interesting that these distance places are now offering it as a tool as part of a courses.

Tell me could this thing run a simple program for my company?

Could i run my printing business from it? . I want to put the jobs on a tablet so my printers can see what the job looks like, what stock and so on Then when they complete they can log the time it took, time finished and so on.

I am sick of paper in all honesty. I also don't really want to give my guys a 5k ipad LOL :p

You can get decent devices from around 2-3k. Custom development is more practical for Android too.
 
On doing research I believe SA is just being flooded with these rebranded old ones that other countries cleared off their shelves.

I would rather order a cheap brand that has ICS,better specs and reviews you can find from overseas e.g. Ainol NOVO 7 or the Kindle Fire.

99USD = R820 for the Novo 7.

It will have to connect via WLAN or internet to check stock levels. It has a browser so can use a web app or you can write an Android App for it.
Battery life is also a consideration.

naaa they can plug it in, so that is fine. I just need something small hey. A laptop for instance would just get in the way. I don't need to check stock levels, i print almost anything so it will just be received stock, counted stock and finished stock count :D. I just want less bloody paper. I print out all the job cards and so on which means i have so much paper work for one job. A nice cheap small device would be awesome.

Sounds pretty simple, is android 2.1 ok? I don't know much about droid but i keep hearing about all these new ones that are so much better and blah blah :D.

An android app sounds like the solution if it does not get used for the stock take it self or you would need some protective covering you can clean/wash off. Touchpad won't be that great with grubby stock takers fingers.

I would go for a newer device (SA get flogged old ****) the 600Mhz processor performance on a tablet will make using it frustrating. Also get one that can get rooted i.e. a common branded one as this will make developers job much easier. You don't want to be forced to be dependant on Android 2.1 for ever and not be able to find developers who can code in it.

why not get the 7inch alcatel from esquire ? bought one last week and very happy with it.
i upgraded the sd card to 32gb and installed a few games and stuff and all is running smoothly
i think they still have it on special for R799 plus it comes pre-installed some decent apps

I posted this more than a year and 3 months ago. Currently the market is flooded with cheap tablets. Hifi got a whole bunch of Sansui tablets on special the weekend as has everywhere.
 
Honestly the proline Takealot has got advertised is trumps, dual core Tablet for R1299 running Jelly Bean??
