Guy calls me on cell. I pick up and he starts selling me something over the phone. I politely tell him I'm not interested. The guy carries on and on talking. I put the phone down while I carry on with my work. About 3 minutes later I pick up the phone and the guy is still yapping away on the line. At this point I press the red button..:D
Jesus Christ...these guys don't know when to give up.

The best one I've heard comes from 8ta telemarketers: You put the phone down on them and they phone back seconds later apologising for the call ending abruptly.

I have been called by "Compare & Save" about 80 times already. Each time I just hang up, only to get called again a week later.

Yeah shame, they probably work on commission so try very hard to make some sales.

Yeah but cold-calling people who didn't consent to it is just not cool. I must be super wealthy and l33t because I always seem to qualify for these 'exclusive' offers that are only made available to 100 people countrywide. Got tired of telling them to f-off, so when I hear anything resembling the word 'offer' I just hang up.

I got called last night just before 7. Then again this morning (different company)

WTF?!

turn it into a game. try to sell them something :D

It is very annoying, fortunately I don't get a huge number of these calls - perhaps 3 or 4 a week usually. Most of the time it seems to be cellc or 8ta, which is quite daft considering they are calling my cellphone to try sell me ANOTHER cellphone. Recently I have had a few which are just a recorded message.

What really irks me is that I have always been quite paranoid about giving out my cellphone number, the only companies that have it are telkom, vodacom, nedbank and my insurance company. Despite my paranoia these telemarketers seem not only to have a number to call but also seem to know who I am. Clearly one or more of the above companies are sharing.

My frustration is not limited to cold calling, I find the people who think presticking junk onto my gate just as annoying, their behaviour is tantamount to vandalism as getting the prestik cleanly off after a day in the sun can be almost impossible. A few years ago I took down the gate intercom because 10 times a day there would be someone ringing it asking for food/money/clothes/job/jesus, now what’s left of the intercom magically collects gate automation company stickers.

I also have no trust in the do-not call lists, they looks more like datamining to me and some of the info they expect you to provide is alarming considering they don’t seem to be very good at safeguarding it.

Besides a do not call list is much more work then for example requiring all call centers to use a specific and easily identifiable number range. Don’t rely on the telemarketers to police themselves – it will not work. I will do it myself, just give me the ability to do it. If you have a smart phone that can filter the number ranges you don’t even have too hear the phone ring.

If you are at home watching your pr0nz, just increase the volume and put your phone next to the speakers.

they are also trying to make a living and support their families. I often try to be as polite as possible in declining their products...

Unfortunately it is often difficult to entertain them when you're busy trying to make a living yourself. They don't feel any sympathy towards me, so I don't see a problem in not feeling any towards them.

Oh my Gawd!! I hate Compare & Save!!

They always call me and then inform me its not a sales call. So, I tell the guy I am not interested and even if he gets me a better deal I am staying with my broker!!

Then he proceeds to tell me MiWay (which I'm sure has shares in Compare & Save) is the best option for me. Again I tell him not interested already got a broker blah blah blah.

He then tells me he is putting me through to MiWay and then I end the call!

Most of the time though they call from a private number. And I hate this because every department at my company also uses the private number. And I always have to answer!

I would have alot of sympathy were it not for the fact that they regulary con uneducated people into signing up for crap they dont want/need etc. My MIL got caught like this with cellc and I had to call and have a huge screaming match with them to cancel when they started adding money to her cell contract.

+1
I used to just hang up on cold callers. These days though I tell them politely that I am not interested and in most cases they give after telling them twice and then they say have a nice day.

This whole system of cold calling is annoying though. Who actually buys products or services from cold callers?

Happened to me twice, and its always MiWay that is the winner.

After I upgraded my credit cards and cheque account, I seemed to get at least 2 or 3 calls a day, selling cell contracts, credit cards, blah blah. For many years, I endured, about 6months ago, I decided to tell the persons I was unemployed and asked if I still qualify. The reactions have ranged from polite to down right rude. I have not received a call in a good couple months.

My advice is to take yourself off that"list" by saying you are unemployed. The thing is that it gets to a point where you want them to call just to hear their reaction(i used to schedule a call back if I was busy) I get the giggles just thinking about it.

that DMA website asks for everything bar your blood type. Imagine the telemarketers got hold of that info...
