I am currently still on Telkom ADSL and since last week i have been contacted by Telkom sales team wanting me to convert to fibre as they are going to do away with copper lines in my area.On asking them if my fax will still work they said both my telkom phone as well as my fax machine will be able to work but according to my ADSL service provider no telephones are able to work on a fibre line.
So is Telkom talking trash and trying to catch me to subscribe to their fibre?

Your ISP is talking trash, your current telephone can work along with a fibre line. It will run via the ONT (optical network terminal). So, in order to make or receive calls, your ONT will need to be powered on, but plainly put, if your ONT dies or is offline, no phone calls whatsoever.

If you are on Openserve and using telkom as an ISP you can just plug your normal phone into the ONT and it will work as normal.

Sorry, I should've mentioned that it's only on Openserve that it works that way (that I know of, seeing that my parents are using it at their premises that way). Telkom does NOT have to be your ISP to use it though.

You can also port your number to VOIP and use a hosted fax to IP service...

You can always port to another provider, they normally handle all of the heavy lifting and as long as your account is paid up and not canceled you are good to go!
