Television specials worth noting...

So there are so many threads on TVs and what's "hot" at the moment, and seeing as that I'm in the market for a new TV I figured I'd create a thread where we can post specials to TVs we've come across.

Specifically, I'm looking for a 50 to 60 inch 3D or non-3D TV under R10k, but unfortunately I know next to nothing about the various models so wouldn't even know a good deal from a bad deal. I've come to the realisation that Smart TVs are pretty useless to me as I have a full media centre system setup already.

So keep 'em specials coming, and any advice would be appreciated...

Basically two options:

Samsung PS51F5500 51" FHD SMART 3D plasma at R8,799 - R8,999. First prize for picture quality, colours, blacks. But you would need dimmer viewing conditions as it's not as bright as LCD and it's reflective.

Samsung UA50F5000 50" FHD LCD at R7,999ish (think I've seen it as low as R6,999 before). Brighter and less reflective, but lesser picture quality.

This is for my main lounge, and the screen is positioned to get absolutely no direct sunlight whatsoever, however it isn't the darkest room in the world during the day. As long as it is watchable during the day I'm okay with that - don't mind flipping the blinds closed during the day if need be.

Does the PN51F5500 only have reflection issues or will it cause a problem during the day with a bright room?

A bright room can be combated by increasing the cell brightness of the screen. As long as the brightness does not directly fall on the screen, you should be good. You can use the Eco sensor to raise and lower the brightness according to the current lighting conditions, so it's brighter in the day, dimmer at night.

Evening and curtain viewing will be a pleasure...

Okay so the PN51F5500 is the best option then. The other consideration is to spend a little more tom and get a nice projector. Hmmm...

Great TV indeed. Bought it on Postman and Keeper's recommendations.

I have a rather bright room during the day and have no real issues with reflections. It is better than my old 42" plasma that got nabbed.

Yep the 51F5500 is the only TV to go for in that price range. Great value but it really is extremely reflective in a well lit room. I owned the previous gen FHD 51" D and E series and the F series is no better in the glare department. It's actually really bad under lights. But the blacks are deeper and overall picture is a bit better than my E series.
