Well, earlier today a Telkom Rep phoned the house line and offered us the upgrade to 10Mbps line with a free DSTV explora decoder. Currently I am on the Simple 3 plan (Simple Plus with 4Mbps and 20GB) and pay more or less R570 for it. They are offering it to me with a softcap of 50GB for around R589 monthly and it sounds like a great deal but just thought I would consult the MyBB community if they are aware of this deal and if it's going to be more cost effective for me to upgrade to it.

Telkom is generally generous with line upgrades if they offer it to you. You already pay the line fee. As long as the line fee is the same and no fine print, it sounds like a good deal.

Phone them and ask for finer detail and cost. Remember, it's recorded. If they screw you over, you can ask for the recordings as per the CPA, and then the battle starts.

I'm not aware of the deal. My SP isn't Telkom.

But I was with them for a while. Their offers keep you happy. It isn't the service levels or network.

If you're gonna use it, it's a good deal.

The R589 quoted does not include line rental whereas the simple plus plan you are on does. I converted from simple plus to 10Mbps and 50GB and am now paying R790 per month. I could trim it a little by removing the closer plan that came as part of simple plus.

I didn't go for the Explora offer as I don't want to commit to a contract but so far I am very happy with the performance of the 10Mbps line.

I agree although I never really had to access their support frequently. Guess their network is not that bad when I think about it. ;)

I am definitely going to use it, since I can then cancel my current Afrihost account for their 20GB package at R89. :)

Thanks for the info. If that is the case, I might have to review my decision to take the deal, but I am also hoping to get more details on the deal tomorrow, when the Telkom rep will call me back at 3pm.

This is what they not telling you about :D...

Thanks and although it would interest some with a big family and budget, it is simply not what me and my wife need at this moment. Just wish they could have had these great deals before the economy was shot to hell by our beloved government.

Still a great deal!

The same Telkom rep called me today just after 3pm and explained the deal in more detail and I asked whether the voice line portion is also included like with my Closer plan and she confirmed that it will be charged for separately along with the weekender plan, making the total jump from R584 to R790.

Initially I was sceptical but after reviewing my decision, I did end up getting a great deal by taking all the optional extras into account. Now I can safely cancel my Afrihost account. Next I will have to go and pick up the devices (wifi modem, DSTv Explora, wifi connector) from a nearby Telkom Direct Store with my ID. :)

That is fantastic, am glad we all helped :).

Welcome aboard and enjoy the ride :D.

That MS Office 365 - is it a one year subscription? I was quite intrigued by this but the Telkom Mobile signal at my place is pretty non-existent :/

Wow! I am still waiting for them to come back to me. When I used the chat service on their website this morning, the person told me they are still waiting for a deposit of R700 before proceeding. Funny thing is they never even let me know that they are asking for a deposit. The she mentioned that if I cannot pay now, the system would cancel the order and I would have to apply again, which I just think is so bloody unfair to people who are not even getting any feedback from Telkom on what's happening to existing orders and the online system on their website just said "executing" which can mean anything.

What was the procedure like for those who already have this service? When I spoke to a person from their technical deaprtment, they said that apparently Telkom received a large amount of responses from people interested in the deal, therefor Telkom is running behind on getting to every order.

Sorry to hear, we just been hit with the same deposit. Here is the response from TelkomZA via PM regarding the deposit, hope it clears things up.

TelkomZA said:
Good day Yuu

As per our billing department certain customers fall within a certain credit limit.
I myself wasn't aware of this , but the consultant advised me that dependent on the packages applied for , some customers are required to provide an up front deposit.
I wish they could have informed and advised you upfront concerning this.

So there you have it. We paid the deposit at the Telkom Direct Store [no need to phone] otherwise you can pay via the P.O. but remember to take your details [control code etc] and phone if not going to the Direct Store but the Post Office.

DONT WANT THIS

Well apparently these reps don't take NO for an answer, after my father told them that he does have a Decoder, and all the other stuff he will NEVER use, as he is 80 and stay alone, they still went and activated this on his account.

BTW try and fix this, it is 3 weeks later and after numerous calls, and going to the local telkom shop, it is still not resolved.

BTW what is the use of telkom shops if they cannot help you.

Is this still the deal?

Why is it so hard to find when browsing the site?

So all that is missing is copper cable land-line rental?

Just checked now too and it seems to have gone :(. Maybe budge with the ad posted and see if they give in :).

It includes copper + rental in that offer posted. NO Hidden Costs at all.

That would definitely be worth it...

I am still very much interested in this deal and just waiting for my salary to pay this R700 at my nearest Telkom Direct Shop for them to proceed with my order. Telkom should really work harder on customer support and retention with the few staff that they have not yet fired. Wish the article hinting at government selling their controlling shares in Telkom to bail out Eskom was true. (Holding thumbs)

Multichoice won't budge on their precious explora! :-(

Just another update in my quest for this deal:

After having my order cancelled and having to re-apply at my local Telkom Direct Shop today, I am happy to report that my line speed has just been upgraded and it shows approximate download speeds of 650 - 788 KB/s through Free Download Manager (FDM). Only wish I could get the deal that I originally applied for, but from the Telkom sales agent at the shop, he indicated that Multichoice is refusing to budge on giving me the explora with the deal and wants me to pay for it upfront. However they said they will try to negotiate with Multichoice to give me this deal including the decoder for the R899 price. However, I would love to stay with the rest of the goodies (line speed, 50GB) and also pay a bit less monthly if Multichoice continues their anti competitive behaviour. :)

Update: I have managed to settle with my friendly Telkom Direct Shop (@ Marshalltown exchange) on the R899 deal that includes the following (valid until 28 February 2015):
