Hi all. Hope this is the correct section as it affects the network more than the ISP.

I have to connect 4 of my staff as remote workers. All the areas in Cape Town and they all have Telkom 10Mpps DSL @ R999 or Wireless @ R899 per month as options at the locations.

I don't know what ADSL is like as I have not used it 5 years. Does it offer better latency than wireless and would you go for wireless or DSL today? The staff just need to browse the internet, connect to HQ via VPN and have voip phones.

Thanks for the feedback, any would be appreciated.

Ultimately you want fibre. If that isn't an option then the next best thing is wireless. Dsl will get the job done but it's old technology and is being phased out. Things like copper theft can leave you with no internet for a very long time.

If there is no fibre, which should be your first choice, DSL is the way to go..

DSL Unlimited Home Premium 10Mbps

  • Up to 10Mbps VDSL speed

Good point about the phased out. Never sure when Telkom will switch it off is kind of stressfull

You will also need to consider if they will be required to upload files. ADSL upload speeds are horrendous.

Also look at Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE.
Yup, backup critical files to HQ over VPN. I can see that being a pain in the a$$ with dsl all going to depend on the upload speed of the wireless which I never checked.

Fibre coming in 6 months, well so the call centre says, That could mean 6 years.

Yeah you can't bank on that as it could go either way. I got fibre before the openserve coverage map reflected it being live.

And they aren't exactly know for their smooth transition from dsl to lte, which means you could be without internet for a while.
