Hi guys,

I'm new here. haha.. i recently got upgraded to a 4mb line but previously was on a 1mb line. (day before the infrastructure upgrade i upgraded my line to a 2mb:D) So about 3 weeks before the upgrade i was getting a massive increase in my ping approx 400ms between PE and CT.. This was in the evenings and during the day its mostly fine. I logged numerous complaints with Telkom, phoned there tech support and eventually got someone to come out and look at my line.. he said there was a problem in PE and had something to do with the infrastructure upgrade and will be sorted out before the end of the week.. Long story short i'm now on a 4mb line and having the same issues as before(the ping problem at night) and whenever i do a speed test(even with normal ping) the max DL speed i get is about 2.4Mbs.. Funny thing is if I change to my Afrihost account i get 3.5Mps and if i have high ping problems and change to my Afrihost account, my ping is perfect.. Am i missing something here?

Thanks in advance :)

Me too. Hi.:)

(the ping problem at night)

During peak hours? Post examples of traceroutes to a few popular web sites, for us to see where the latency is coming from.

(even with normal ping) the max DL speed i get is about 2.4Mbs

So this is your throughput during the day (off-peak period) I presume, but what's it look like at night? Post some speedtest results and your modem stats (include sync speed, attenuation, SNR, CRC errors) while you're at it.

if I change to my Afrihost account i get 3.5Mps

What's your Telkom usage sitting at for the month? They're probably shaping you.

if i have high ping problems and change to my Afrihost account, my ping is perfect

Just to clarify; if you change accounts during peak periods, it fixes your ping as well?

Hi Jones :)

I'll attach some trace routes below.

Connection Speed: downstream: 4096kbps upstream:511kbps
Line Attenuation: downstream: 41.0 db upstream:24.0db
speedtest between PE and CT: ping:29 download:2.06Mbps upload:0.36Mbps

Those readings i took now. should i do it again when i have high ping?

usage for the month downloaded is 31gb and uploaded is 6gb approx. ive checked and some months i use alot less because im not always at home and still same problem. also asked telkom when i had this problem if they were shaping me and they said no.. :(

Last statement is correct.. the moment i change accounts my ping is awesome Lol.

Thanks again :)

Sounds like DNS problems.

So I'm guessing you're also in PE :)

Try rangers recommended Telkom Internet manual DNS settings for PE and see if that helps:

Primary - 196.43.46.190
Secondary - 196.43.42.190

Thanks so so much MickZA.. seems to have solved my ping problem.. i still get slow speeds, like 2.4mbps but the ping is sorted so far! again massive thanks!!
