Tired of this throttling crap from Telkom. I've more or less been downloading the bulk of my downloads after 5 in the afternoons and on weekends and still got throttled - Hoped there would be some kind of advantage for not downloading during office hours.

I'm looking for an alternative ISP for more or less the same pricing.

I'm a heavy bandwidth user but most of the bandwidth being used is only after 5pm in the afternoons. I don't stream or download anything during office hours because I need the ADSL at these times for work stuff.

What ISP would be a good alternative for my needs?

If youcan keep your downloads from 00:00 to 06:00 definitely Web Africa. If you need to download from 17:00 then Web Africa Business.

You can also pop a mail to [email protected]

New ISP launched by a few MyBB members. They don't have a site yet as they only launching in a few weeks, but a few people have already been using them on the forum.

The Incredible Connection home uncapped package flies after 5pm and on weekends but it's heavily shaped during office hours if you are a heavy user.

I personally use webafrica bussiness capped and I love it!

Loading shedding accounts

+1

and no 30 day like Web Africa and Telkom Internet.

Yes indeed you can literally cancel on the last day of the month and it won't be renewed.

Yeah heavy usage would cause 8am to 5pm speed to be like 50KB/s download speed on EVERYTHING. 5pm and whole wekend it opens up to full speed on EVERYTHING.

As had been made abundantly clear in other threads, there is only an advantage to downloading between 00h00 and 06h00. Our highest demand is between 18h00 and 22h00, when hundreds of thousands of other people want to youtube and download everything. In fact, it has less impact on our network if you download from 08h00 to 09h00 than 20h00 to 21h00.

Office hours is also not the peak demand time in most 1st world countries.

See for example https://stats.linx.net/

Funny that...

I would recommend as follows:

If your usage is very high and you need to:
- stream, game, browse, email, download from midnight - morning: Web Africa Business uncapped
- download all day all night, game, browse, email: Afrihost/Axxess business uncapped

If your usage is not very high and you need to:
- stream, game browse, email: Web Africa Home capped or Vox capped
- download, game, browse, email: Afrihost/Axxess capped

I'm just not a big fan of most home uncapped products these days. I'm on Web Africa home capped and it's an excellent all round capped product - it just works for me.

So if you download between 00h00 and 06h00 it won't count against Telkom's throttling cap? In other words, Telkom won't count bandwidth used between 00h00 and 06h00 and use it against you when determining when to throttle your connection until the end of the next month?

Yes if you download between 00:00 and 06:00 it counts less towards your usage.
I've pulled about 300gigs this month and I'm about halfway on Orange on TiTracker, I'm on 4mbps.

Personally I only start scheduling to download between 00:00 and 06:00 when I hit orange on TiTracker to keep myself out of the red zone.
If you do this I doubt you will get throttled, in fact I have never been throttled since joining Ti.

For me Ti works great, besides the general consensus I found it to be a better uncapped product than many others I've tried.
Streaming is where Ti wins for me.

My guees is that it is quite a challenge (technically) to be counting when people download stuff and work with that to give them an "advantage" ... Is this really true? The Telkom I know looooooovvvveees shafting people and I doubt this to be true.. if true, what advantage do you get?

Well if it's anything like IS's star system, it means you will get shaped less.
