Telkom 4mbit trial

We've had a 4meg DSL line under the 4mbit trial which worked relatively well (intl. speeds still <500kbit on uncached content), but local transfers really flew. So far so good.

We recently dropped Telkom as our ISP (switched to an ISP that could offer >3GB accounts) and I've noticed that our transfers are back to 1mbit speeds.

Is the 4mbit trial limited to TelkomInternet customers only?

Check your line sync on your modem, if that reads 4096kbps then you are at 4Mbit, any slower speeds is a result of your ISP.

Which ISP are you using btw?
 
Also, most , if not all ISPs shape during office hours so you will rarely get near 4mbit during the day.

Not necessarily - I was recently and inadvertently downgraded to 512 from 4096 and my sync-speed remained at 4096. I use a myriad of ISPs and they're all throttled to 512. :o

Apparently I had an upgrade request pending from mid last year that I forced them to cancel and then I re-applied. Hopefully I'll be back up to speed this week. :o
 
In Jan 2007 ordered the 384DSL then last week
I upgraded to the 1 Mb (4Mb trial)(upgrade took 1 day) ,
the only gripe with 4 Mb line in SA was that I went thru my
3Gb cap in literally 5-6hrs, that really sucks.

Make sure that you have a 2nd DSL account handy
otherwise you are stuffed with no Internet access except
access to the telkom.co.za website.

This is true. In line with the speed increases Telkom need to increase caps, and make local uncapped.
