Telkom 800VGT

I was thinking of getting myself a Telkom 800VGT Router. My past experience with Routers was a nightmare…..

This time I really would like to get myself a user friendly Router….After doing some research I came across this 800VGT.

Reply from any-one with a 800VGT and how “user friendly” the Router is to set-up would be appreciated.

The 800vgt router comes with the easy installation disc, that plays videos on how to setup your router. if you look at the videos, you would not have any problems in setting it up.

I've never had a problem with ANY router that costs like more than R400...

As long as it ain't a no-name piece of garbage, I say that a router is a router. Set it and forget it. Unless you want to do some magic with it other than normal ADSL?

A friend of mine, who knew nothing about networking, got that 800VGT router and she had no problem installing it.
It came with a pretty awesome Installation program so she didn't even have to phone Telkom to help her out.
If you've had a bad experience, then the 800VGT would probably be the way to go.

I have two 800VGT devices. Even though the device does offer a good array of features, I would NOT buy one again in a hurry.

Very few of the Telkom helpdesk staff have any idea of the machinations of the device.

The HTTP interface is very slow.

Rebooting time is about 90 seconds... a lifetime when one is tapping one's fingers waiting for the reboot.

The user manual frequently does not describe what is actually present in the user interface firmware.

The “serial port recovery console”, which I have had to use for reasons known only to the senior gods, is a nightmare to use.

Here's hoping that there is a firmware upgrade in the near future that can address these issues.

All that said, I would buy a million of these 800VGT before I bought another Mega 105WR modem.

I agree, Telkom can be difficult some times.

Have you tried the Router Support....they seem to know the Router pritty well.
