Can one buy a telkom data account without owning a line? I am specifically referring to buying data standalone to be used on eg. a friend's active ADSL line here.

Edit: Oops, no, you can't without a landline as it asks for a Telkom Account number :/. Best to take it on your said friend's account and pay the monies to them. :wtf:

But then I have no "control" over my own account. Seems to be the only ISP in the country that cannot provide me with a pure data account.... :(

Why do you specifically want Telkom then? Or do you want to use the Integrated Data Wallet?

What sort of control?? data usage?

Another alternative is you purchase the 20GB account then get the integrated data sim and pop it in an LTE modem/router and use it that way. Monitor usage using the tracker tool. No need to put access details on the dsl line. This also works on TM 3G.

That would be nice, but no. I have multiple adsl accounts (webafrica, afrihost, sainet, mweb etc) and need to add telkom to the mix. I use it to troubleshoot ADSL lines and eg. instances where client X cannot access resource Y. A case of "redundancy" in a way.

Password control, believe it or not.

I have absolutely had it with telkom trying to place the blame on the ISP account when the Internet LED on the router of a client goes red. They struggle to deviate from the script and listen to reason. So purely as a bonus, if I had my own Telkom account, I could satisfy their scripted requirement to reset the password by letting them reset the thing already.

Theres a guest telkom login for this purpose iirc

Yeah, you can.

Order online or go to a Telkom Direct Store?

Let us know if you come right. :)

So, you may not be able to "order" one online, but you should be able to get one by calling the call centre :-/.

Attempt 1: I went into a telkom shop. I asked them to sign me up for 20GB ADSL, standalone - aka bill me for the data alone so that I can then use the account on any active ADSL line. They did not seem to have an issue. Then they asked me for the letter from the landlord so that they can transfer the line to my name :erm: "oh and we have this 5GB/R99x24 contract special this month" ... they were so interested in peddling me a contract that they clearly did not listen to my story. I repeated my requirements. They told me that only the call centre can do that.

Attempt 2: Ordered online and got them to call me. They actually call me, confirm my details etc etc...they then ask me for my delivery address. I correct them as there should be no delivery with an ADSL product. They confirm etc etc. and I was told that I should hear from them soon. I follow up a few days later - nobody can find any record of my order.

Attempt 3: I call in and place an order for 20GB Adsl. We go this way and that way and get absolutely nowhere. The agent seems unsure about what she is doing and in the end transfers me to technical so that they can sort me out! :erm:

Attempt 4: Called in again, but just as I was seemingly going through the call got dropped.

I have not tried again.
