Hi how does telkom limit your connection to 384kps if you subscribe to the 384kps option, i was told that their is no way thay can do it, Unless its done in the modem? i also notice that i am useing telkoms dns servers and not my isp's

I'm pretty sure there's no problem enforcing this at the exchange. If they can limit it to 512kbps, why would they have a problem with 384kbps?

Afaik Telkom uses ADSL G.Lite spesification ("splitterless" ADSL - allows greater distances from exchange) which limits the line speed to 2MB which is what my ADSL router config tells me.

The line is physically capable of 2MB but Telkom throttles it down to 512/384K using their router which you can't bypass.

interesting, So is their a different router if you have subscribed to 512k than if you subscribed to 384k, or is it the same router with a different setting. I was told by an ISP that telkom has no way limiting the connection with adsl from speeds of 512k only via the modem. but could be wrong.

My understanding is (please correct me folks) is that your telephone line goes into a box called a DSLAM at the telephone exchange where they match your line to a particular port and they know what package you signed up for.

I presume at some stage their router sitting behind the DSLAM gets this info and then throttles your connection.

So unless you know somebody on the inside ... your connection ain't ever going to exceed what you signed up for.

Does this mean that the speed up until the exchange is running at 2MB? Interesting... now all I need to do is find the exchange ;)
