Telkom Adsl Availibility

I live in a small town on the Natal North Coast called Mandini. I recently enquired about the availibility of ADSL here in my town. The Telkom rep said that the exchange would only cater for adsl next year in July.

Since then an Internet Cafe opened up here. Because the guy has to use ISDN, his telephone bill is in excess of R4000 pm. We have many internet users in town who would make use of ADSL, should it be available.

We have started a petition and already have in excess of 50 people that have indicated that they would use ADSL. More are signing by the day.

Now here is my question: Does anyone here know who we could contact on Telkom's side to assist us with our problem?

www.hellkom.co.za, I'm sure MaD would be able to assist you with that question. As for the internet cafe owner, tell him to stop being a dumbass and get a 64k diginet line, it will save him a couple of hundred bucks (even a couple of thousand) a month and it would be something he can budget for, as (unless telkom pushes up the price) it's at a fixed monthly cost.

As soon as ADSL is available, he can drop the line and get ADSL and in effect lower his prices as well to get more guys surfing the net there, as suppose to getting their own ADSL.

Btw, I managed an internet cafe (quite successfully) for about a year and a bit. I can tell you now, our phone bill was no more than R1000 and we offered 64k PER pc (we had 9 pc's)

I think I once downloaded 9 files at the same time and maxed out the satelite connection

oh, and he can save money like we did by getting a 33.6k analogue leased line and a satelite downlink, however, I see these days they even cap satelites..... we used to get 1.1mbps downstream, then they capped per thread to 64k, but multithreaded it still rawked.

Any one else that knows someone "big" at Telkom or who knows someone who knows someone at Telkom? We really want to get ADSL going here before the next millenium.

Voodoo, I know Peapod had a similar issue in Balito in October 2003.
She managed to organise ADSL in the area. Maybe she can give you some pointers.
