Hi Guys,

I have been looking at these forums for some time because of my intrest in ADSL and have been looking at all the serious horror stories on this forum. The good thing is that Telkom seems to have ironed out most of the really big issues so my interest has become even more profound, especially as I am currently spending about a K on internet via dial-up.

Anyway, now that everyone on the forum is asleep, I have acouple of issues that are worrying me and I would like to see what you guys have to say:
1. In the ordering process, Telkom asks alot of questions about my PC that I am very uncomfortable answering. Is this okay?
2. Currently I run a 2K server that has my dial-up modem. I have enabled it's Internet Sharing and thus can run my 4 machines. With the whole "1 Connection" thing. Is it possible to do this as an option with ADSL?
3. If not, I am planning on getting a D-Link ADSL Router Model Number: DSL-504T Is this a good option?
4. I am very worried as per the cap (as per everyone) there are two of us that have, ummm, high bandwidth usage. We are planning to sign up with a MMOL, is 20GB a good option?
5. Do the MMOL use any of the shaped ports? And if so is it really that bad?
6. I am also VERY worried about spy/adware. I have noticed that they can at times chew bandwidth (and could be cap). How do you guys deal with that?

Well those are my concernes. I hope that you guys can help as they (other than the price) are the only things that are actually stopping me from getting ADSL.

1. Just tell them anything - I've no idea why they want to know, I told them I'm running Solaris and Windows 3.1 on an Apple with 1mb of RAM and a 5k hard drive

2. This goes with point 3 - yes - that's a good enough router and you won't need to run internet connection sharing unless you have to. Assuming you already have your LAN setup and configured, each computer will automatically connect to the net via the router or switch or whatever you have setup.

3. That's a good router - nothing wrong.

4. I'm not sure who MMOL are ? There are plenty of good ISP's offering from 2gb to 30gb - axxess and AYCE are two that spring to mind. 30gig will cost you in the region of R560 on top of your line rental

5. If MMOL are reselling SAIX accounts, then yes, the ports are shaped. No, it's not usually bad - there are times when the network seems to go for a ball of ****, last week for instance. Today I've been getting p2p downloads at 100% capacity

6. spy/adware - just exercise caution, it's all you can do. Keep your spyware up to date and use Mozilla Firefox for general browsing and surfing

Thanks bb_matt,

MMOL are Massively Multiplayer Online. (Dunno, I have seen lots of abreviations for it)
To be honest I am not really a P2P person, probably as it is pointless with dial-up, so we'll see.

Anouther question that I have is what is PPPoE software? Is it really needed?

you need not worry about PPPoE, on some routers you just have to change it to PPPoE over Ethernet instead of PPPoE over ATM, or somesuch not sure.
I got myself the D-Link DSL-504T as well just waiting for the Line, which should be installed this weekend.
a MMOL is better known as a MMO(RP)G, and the ports they use have very low priority. This only applies to international though.

Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet.
It is a method to make your PC talk to a DSL connection from your phonejack.

You can either use the built-in Windows XP client or use an intelligent router that will handle the connection for you.

If you use the router option (i.e. coneccted to your LAN switch /hub) you do not need the software. All you do is plug the router into your LAN switch, set it up via the interface (all should be revealed in the manual) and presto. The PPPoE software is used on individual computers as a "dial-in" type thing, so you use the software to activate or de-activate a single pc's connection. DO NOT USE IT

Hope it helps

Thanks guys.
Last question before I leave you all to your peace: With the MMOG (thanks h0ll0w) ports heavly shaped. Does this really effect anything?

What game are you planning on playing? 10 gigs should be more than enough for most games and two people, As long as they are your standard RPG type games. ie: SWG, UO, WoW, DAoC, etc. FPS games tend to use up a lot more.

Playing FPS I've almost hit my 3 gig cap in a month in the first 2 weeks. RPG style games.. NEVER! I've put in about 140 hours worth of playing wow since the 25th of last month, and this month I dont think i'm even close to the 700 meg mark, never mind the 1 gig.

Unfortunatly though Shaping is a problem. At least for me, I found that during certain times of the month when downloads can become heavy, my ping would shoot up from about 400 ms, to 7k ms. When your playing a rogue in WoW and you have 5 secs from Gouge to backstab, and you have to wait 7 secs just to see that your Gouge stuck.. your dead.

I've got a Nukecap account which Clipse here on the forums can give you more info about, which I use to get around the port shaping and I now have pings between 280ms and 550ms. He can also give you my stats of how much I've used on my account this month to give you an idea of how much a game like WoW can download an hour

PS: Clipse.. could you PM my stats as well please LOL

yeah it sure does. for example take wow : On shaped ADSL in SA you get a latency of about 600 - 2000 milliseconds on USA servers, if your ADSL was unshaped your latency would be at about 200 - 600(?) ms. Better yet if those servers were local you would have a max ping of 50 ms. ;)

sjoe, one blast from the past and 'ol! can only guess the spammer searched for "MMO" and happened across this thread. funny how lots of ppl suddenly are interested in MMORPG's these days. i'm developing quite an Aion addiction myself
