Hi

Anyone knows what could cause this problem? I installed adsl for my sister today, we got a new billion router - i've tried with NAT and with Bridge mode but I can't get access to the internet.

When I use bridge mode - my machine does get a WAN IP and I can ping the gateway IP. When I try to ping www.google.co.za or any other local website, the hostname is resolved to an IP address, but there is no response to the ping - I did this on hostnames that accepts pings.

Summary:
I'm connected to the internet, hostnames resolve to IP address, but I can't do anything online.

Help or recommendations are appreciated! :o

Can you ping the IP address? Maybe the router is blocking ICMP.

Can you do a "telnet www.is.co.za 80"
Or "telnet 196.34.149.154 80"

Do you get a connection? Who's you ISP? Did you do a self install? If so did you go to the Telkom URL where you have to activate/confirm that your line is working.

I didnt do the activate/confirm - i'm also not really sure what url is to that site - do you know where I can go and look for it.

I'm at home now, so I can directly test anything, but I will go back a bit later and try the telnet suggestion.

I tried both ways - nat (meaning I entered the connection details [uname/pword] and bridged mode pppoe, entering both my own adsl login details and that of my sisters, but the problem remains the same.

I'm wondering now if it isn't the activate thing - because that I didnt do.

I am able to ping the gateway, but not even the www.Telkom.co.za site wants to open, should this open even if I hadn't done the Activation yet?

thank you so much for replying :)

Windoze firewall blocking port 80, or .. even better .. the poor woman has that Nortons Virus installed, and Norton's virus is not configured to allow browsing.

I tried connecting on two different machines - desktop with Vista and laptop with XP, excatly the same problem!

Also effectively bridged mode should bypass any router restrictions and the sympton there remains the same too!

What happens when you do a tracert to a ip?

i.e. c:>tracert 66.249.91.147

then see where it stops.

I noticed your location is in Erasmuskloof - this is where my sister stays too, obviously you're not experiencing any problems.

Can I do a tracert to my wan IP or should it be another IP address?

Do something like the ip I gave above (google). I do not have any problems here except something funny on my router where it is not assigning DNS addresses when my pc get's a ip via dhcp. So I have to hard code dns servers in my ip config

that problem with the dns - i've had that too, but only when using nat - in bridged mode, you dont have that problem!

THANKS EVERYONE - if more ideas come across, please dump it here; i'm going to leave now and see if I can't do anything else.

what exactly is bridged mode? I know how nat works

bridge is when you dial a broadband connection from your operating system; this puts your pc directly on the internet and the router merely acts as a bridge - hope it makes sense.

The problem was resolved - thank you everyone! I had to activate the self install on telkom's website - you need your telephone number and the order number to do so!

Always a good idea to read the instructions Telkom gives you.;)
