Telkom makes doing business in line with international norms difficult.
Firstly, we are suffering regular 5 minute service disruptions - wasting time of staff.
Second it is unaffordable to keep off-site backups of data - as our international competitors do. It is simply too expensive to run an automated backup system keeping around 5GB backed up on an off-site server. I would have loved to back my data up on a virtual server somewhere in the USA. But even doing it for such a trivial amount of data, Telkom charges too much to make it viable. Guess who will get the job: SA company: we do daily backups by creating a DVD which is taken of site by an employee. Or European company: We have automated systems that create daily backups of our data on a server in another continent. The process requires no human input, and is monitored daily.
Telkom's inability to manage their affairs in a manner that allows affordable ADSL is killing the country.
