Hello - this is our first post so, apologies if all this has been asked before. I raised a question on our blog with iblog.co.za a few days ago, as follows:

"What is it with Telkom? Internet was working yesterday but the mail server was not (I’m sure they didn’t tell me this was going to be off line for maintainance). And today the mail server is working OK but the internet speed has slowed down - I’m sure that I’m not getting my 384kbps (why does my internet icon show 100Mbps connection?). Does anyone know how I can check this?"

I received a reply suggesting a speed check which I did. Four times yesterday and again this morning. The advice I then received was to ask you guys on mybroadband.co.za

This is the result of my speed checks:

I did the speed test 4 times yesterday. The 3 between 4pm and 6pm showed latency ranging from 1300 to 1640; upload speed between 570b/s and 8.4 Kb/s; download speed between 2 b/s and 167 b/s; the tests suggested I was running a 14.4k modem which was between 10 x slower and ‘infinity’ x slower than average modem speeds; would take between 5 minutes and 5 days to load an average web page; between 7 hours and 401 days to download a 10Mb file.

Then I did a speed test at 11pm last night and got great results! Latency of 845.3; upload speed of 3 seconds; 3 minutes for a 10Mb download; and it showed that I had a 1.5M ADSL line and it was working 14.5 times faster than average modem speeds.

This morning its back to a 14.4k modem running 5 x slower with a 4 minute load and 5 hours to download 10 Mb.

I was advised to register with www.mybroadband.co.za and ask if anyone knows what I can do to get a decent service with Telkom. Much of what I’ve picked up from the forums talks about ‘end of the month’ restrictions, but yesterdays results were very strange. If I had any hair I’d pull it out!

Thanks for your patience
