Hi,

I have a friend who is keen to finally get ADSL going. I haven't felt the need to be in touch with pricing lately and telkom's pricelist has me a bit confused as they don't seem to clarify on a couple of points. http://www.telkom.co.za/general/pricelist/adsl.html

1.) Firstly, they don't specify what a "bundle" consists of even though the prices between bundle and no bundle are the same.

2.) What current minimum speeds are implied for "fast" ADSL, " "faster" ADSL and "fastest" ADSL?

3.) Does the installation cost include a router?

She wants to know where she stands with cost so it will be a once-off installation cost of R750 and then a monthly line rental of fast/faster/fastest depending on her choice? No additional/hidden costs? No landline on this line btw.

Thanks

I know this isn't what your looking for, but try to find a Telkom Direct store, they will be able to answer questions regarding pricing etc.

Obviously they will market their own brands (ISP modem etc) keep a clear mind and note everything.

Don't immediately accept a deal, rather go on the internet and check out other ISP pricing and features, or come back here for more advice.

First time customers usually gets a free modem and installation, inquire first though.

Fast ADSL = 1Mbps
Faster ADSL = 2Mbps
Fastest ADSL = 4-10Mbps (depends on exchange);

All speeds above depend on exchange distance and copper quality. Its a best effort service, keep that in mind.

PS: The first month is usally billed with one month upfront. Please be carefull for bill shock. They do warn about this when you apply.

The bundle consists of ADSL line rental and data package. The ADSL line rental will be the same even if you don't take a package. Data is generally also the same, but when taking a package you will save on installation fees and the cost of a router(included in most packages)

***YOU WILL PAY AN ADDITIONAL ~R160 FOR VOICE LINE RENTAL***

Also, an additional ~R20 for a line package which will give your friend free South African calls over weekends and after 7 at night.

Edit - if there is no line installed at all, you may incur an additional cost to install the line. The R750 is for converting the line into an ADSL line.

Thanks, guys.

The intention was never to use Telkom as an ISP. There is a direct store nearby so I'll go along with her and check it out. I think she first needs to speak to her complex body corporate and see what the story is on line availability etc.
