Lo peeps...

After a dig around the Telkom website I finally tracked down the "Acceptable use policy for ADSL Access Service"

http://www.telkom.co.za/pls/portal/docs/page/contents/athome/products/dsl/downloads/ADSL AUP.pdf

...sooooo as far as I can tell, anything that actually uses a significant portion of the bandwidth available is abusing the service.

So what I pay (a lot) for I'm not allowed to use.
And now with 1024Kb DSL I can pay even more to use even less.

standard 3GB a month (Telkom says that's all we need)
3GB/month = 24Gbits/month = 0.8Gbits/day = 9.26kbps
so for 512ADSL "significant" would be over 1.8%
and for 1024ADSL it would be over 0.9%.

Looking at that last figure makes me realise how utterly, utterly, UTTERLY insane the local ADSL structure is.

(It's taking a large amount of willpower not to smash the keys of my laptop right thru the desktop. Telkom seems to be doing that to me more often)

**sigh**

EDIT: Those percentages should be 1/3 less as I didn't include upstream bandwidth. 1024ADSL (up and down) would be about 0.7%

PS. If this has been brought up before I apologise, but I need to vent ;)

omfg lol they may aswell say: "our service is not ment to be used."

You and me both POX i vent here on the Forums beacuse..well..i'm pissed off and Telkom don't give a flying ****..about one user's rant's but here on the forums at least you feel better after said rant...unless i get flamed to death :D :D

Me thinks this document is the ideal document to present when laying a false advertising complaint for the current advertising campaign and should be forwarded to the advertising standards people

:D If you've come here expecting to get flamed for giving telkom ****, you're badly mistaken :p

I was just going to say that. Here we have an official statement that no downloading of MP3's (among other things) will be allowed! Their advertising campaign says that ADSL is ideal for it!!

Examples of prohibited use include, but are not limited to, running servers (that put traffic on the network)

this was tried in the uk about 2 years ago and caused tremendous uproar.
think msn messenger, icq etc....all "servers" byt his definition...isp's eventually revised their terms to define what their idea of a server is.

think about it...listens on a port, responds to requests= a server.

give them hell guys...

I rant about this topic all the time Pox. I feel ure pain.

moral of the story (according to Telkom)... don't play games, download anything or chat to anyone, it will clog up their network.

What the hell is wrong with these people ?

Telkom: Try our new high-speed ADSL internet service!

Me: Still expensive but should be cheaper and a lot faster than ISDN, so OK, gimme

Telkom (insert random delay, random order losses etc.): Here's your ADSL

Me: Nice, it's fast and stays on...lekka

Telkom (later): To keep the network running smoothly please leave the modem
permanently unplugged and keep on paying us. If you plug your modem in you will be in violation of our usage rules and will be fined. This will obviously improve the service for all South Africans.

Me: err...what?....run that by me again please.

this is definitely contradictory to their advertising. can any lawyers out there tell us if this sounds like a promising case to take on? At the very least we get some decent publicity while telskum gets crapped on again and we may actually win(my opinion anyways) ... so?

I submitted it to the ASASA as a supporting document to suport my complaint i laid against telkom for their false advertising.... i'm waiting with - not so - bated breath....

Either way the consumer wins. If the ASASA agrees with us, then the advertising is removed. If not then disregard Telkom's DSL limitations.

Not to appear like a Telkom apologist (I'm far from that), but the text is...

Downloading files like movies, MP3s,
games and software using software
such as Napster, Kazaa, E-donkey
etc.

which to me implies that you may not use p2p apps for what would amount to music sharing...no mention of "you may not download mp3s".

/me applies my asbestos undies in anticipation of the flaming

Ok... now music sharing is one issue - but who actually manages to complete the download of a song let alone a movie, without some sort of download manager/file sharing(transfer) client

Agreed. However those application are not evil as Telkom would want us to believe. There are many legitimate files available via those channels.
