There is an order for a Telkom ADSL and Voice Line installation for a bachelors flat in Bloemfontein. Telkom has confirmed that the installation will take place on 14/04/2014.

I have done a quick inspection of the flat and I cannot seem to find the usual "white plate" Telkom would run it's telephone outlet from for the line.

How may this complicate the installation of lines into the complex. Are there any signs that an installation may be complicated or easy by looking at preexisting infrastructure.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Change it to a Simple package if you can...comes with free install. Don't think that applies if you order them separately. One of the month2month capped ones. On the Simple packages they generally do all the install...within reason...they won't do telephone poles etc.

Be sure to specify self-install.

Do any of your neighbors have a phone line? If yes then you should be OK...if nobody in the building/complex has one then chances are you're fkd.

edit...or you might as well pick a telkom uncapped on instead of a capped one & see how that works out for you. Its the same level of hassle either way so might as well try their uncapped

I have ordered the simple so that is good. :)

I am just concerned that Telkom shows up for the installation and say something like they can't install.

Apart from the obvious saving of installation costs, why is it important to self-install ? I have opted for their installation service because I have no idea what I should do...

plug ADSL filter into wall socket, plug modem and telephone in to filter.
connect modem to PC and follow install instructions in the Router box to set up you internet.
That is self install and they charge a few hundred bucks for that.

ask the body corporate or landlord?

it should be there, places that do not have it, have another provider and you would of been introduced to their service when you moved in. normally..

<gasp> I'm not using Telkom as ISP and have my own ADSL modem. So it would be a couple of hundred for simply fitting an ADSL filter. So I take it they do not do any fancy line testing with their own equipment or such ?

It will depend on whether work has to be done on the DP, SDC, MSAN/ISAM/DSLAM and/or MDF.... you don't have access to those.

Telkom still needs to install the line if there isn't one and activate activate ADSL on the exchange for you, only they can do that.

The Self install option is exactly what i said the plugging in of the modem.

Thanks then, you just helped me save a couple of hundred (if Telkom allows me to change my mind after signing the contract).

The installation date was set and confirmed multiple times with reminder (via SMS) to be today and there has been no notification or sign of any Telkom staff dispatched to complete the order.

Does anyone have any experience as whom may provide any answers to the reason for the Telkom no-show...

Any help and assistance would be appreciated.

Some more information:

Op die stelsel sien sy “an extra DP has to be installed in exchange box. Completed on 11 Apr 2014. “
Verder wys dit net dat daar op 14e n tegniese probleem ondervind is en dat dit tans aandag kry.

Lets hope for the best. *Holds thumbs

In the end Telkom wants to install the WCDMA solution. Does anybody have any information on that product and how it works for a Telkom line replacement?

Whoa!!!! Be VERY careful.... find our EXACTLY how much the data is going to cost you. Forget about uncapped...

Would there be any way to confirm what the "lack of infrastructure" actually is?

If you order via a Telkom store and they you can be pretty sure its legit.

If you order via an ISP then its hit & miss whether the no infrastructure is true.

I thought the telkom wireless substitutes you can just jam a normal adsl account on it?
