Hi,
After resettling in Cape Town (used to European broadband access), I opted for an ethernet modem when applying ... Now I have this absolute §$%§/ ADSL Combo which is a modem and a router, so I cannot use my Linksys-Router with custom Linux-OS. Unforntunately it is not possible to get the Telkom-Router to supply WLAN on a continueous basis (works for a few minutes, then has problems, works again, etc.), so I was wondering whether I can buy a stand-alone modem somewhere.
Do you have any ideas on this?

regards
juro

P.s. please move this thread, if this is not the correct forum ...

Sorry to hear. You should have gone through these forms first. It's always better to get your own modem, and don't sign any contracts with Telkom!
You can try to return your Telkom modem back to them, and then buy youself something else, like Billion.

juro, welcome to MyADSL :).

Please elaborate, which ethernet ADSL router did Telkodemonopolies supply you with? - if you could link & route us to a modem|router picture, it might speak a thousand Macaroni words, or perhaps a Billion positives...

Are you using PPPoE in Linux with the ADSL Router, is the router in bridged mode?

Have you got any analogue devices [telephone, fax machine etc] attached to the ADSL line, if so, is there a microfilter inbetween the analogue devices and the ADSL line?

Nod, NOW you tell me ;)

ic, thanks.
Unfortunately I have a marconi Telkom ADSL Premium Combo which works well enough, when the PCs are connected to the onboard router via cable. wlan jerks around and it is not possible to have a continuous connection (bad for skype, gaming, etc). After troubleshooting the wlan issue, only the router can be fault, I get the same problems when the wlan is open and I am right next to it.

I'm surprised that Telkodemonopolies is still giving them Macaroni modems away, IMO you should take the Macaroni back to the beast, and demand a Billion in exchange for your custom.

Ok, thanks. I shall do so and post their comments on that ...

Some routers had issues when using 802.1X authentication on the client PC. I'm presuming you're using WEP or WPA with a static encryption key (this is the most common setup.)

If you're using Windows to manage your wireless settings: On Windows XP SP2, setting a static encryption key automatically disabled 802.1X, but on the odd chance that you never upgraded to SP2, do the following:
* On your XP PC, open up Control Panel -> Network Connections
* Get the properties of your wireless network connection
* On the wireless netwrks tab (might be somewhat different, it's been a while since I've worked on SP1), locate the SSID you're connecting to and click on Properties
* Open the Authetication tab and ensure that 802.1X authentication is disabled. (If it's grayed out, this means you're running XP SP2 with a static encryption key already, and your problem is somewhere else.)

If you're not using Windows to manage your wireless settings: ensure that youre network-driver specific software does not attempt to use 802.1X-based authentication. This frequently results in the Wireless access point dropping and re-negotiating the connection.

Finally, if all else fails, stick an ordinary house fan on the router and check to see if it's not the extreme heat of recent days that's causing the wireless radio to reset (not impossible, from what I've heard.)

Thank you for your help, but I guess these routers are just a bunch of §$&$§)/=

So I have decided to go out and get myself a custom Billion and of course the question is which one. Do you have any recommendations? I am going to have three devices connecting via Wireless, so obviously I want a strong wireless router...

Back when I was in the UK a little over two years ago, the Linksys routers were all the rage, with Netgear also quite popular. I managed to get myself a very nice WRT54G at the time which, although outdated by now, is still quite popular.

Unfortunately I do not have much experience with the Billion brand, but it seems to be quite popular on these forums.

The best advice I can give is to dive in and spend one or two nights Googling on the subject to become familiar with the playing field first.

If you want strong wireless you can get the Billion 7300M.. That router works really well.

Well I used a Linksys WRT54G, which would work well, but it does not have a modem included, which obviously is needed. Or can I buy a stand alone modem as well?

Get a Netgear DG834GT. Strong wireless signal, very good Administration and Firewall.

Sorry, had various Netgear models and they did not work well and had an alarming drop out quota.
