Hey all.... happy new year.

On xmas day our usb modem got a direct hit of lightning.luckily we didnt lose our pc... now last week my ma went and tried to get a new modem.apparently Telkom dont produce Usb Modems anymore  So we had to pay another R400 and get a router. Now i wasnt here at the time and all my mom did was put in the cd and install normally.

The thing that is pissing me off now is that everytime i turn the pc on the internet is automatically connected.I dont want this due to bandwidth savings. And also when i have to dial in,where the heck am i meant to dial in.The old dial in for the usb is still there but that doesnt work as its for the old usb modem thats fried.

I go to -Start - Programs - Telkom ADSL 5102G...

i have the following options :
Manage Connection & Isp Settings
Restore Old Settings
Start Online interface
Install Wizard

any help appreciated....

the router is in router mode, no dialing in is required, internet is on permanently.

when the router is in bridged mode then you dial in from the pc.

Yea matt .. you have to put the router into bridged mode, which is a little bit tricky.

Goto http://10.0.0.2 in yer Browser to enter the router configuration screens.
Default login = admin, password = admin.

Write down the old settings so you can revert back when they bugger up.

Then put the router into bridged mode and create a new PPOE dial-up connection for the PC to use.

Or

You could just get into the habbit of switching the router off when you're not using it.

P.S. change the router password while you're there as well.

Matt. the advise offered above is 100% correct, and there is little that i can add, except that whover told you that Telkom no longer supplies USB routers is not up to date with Telkom offerings : the Telkom Mega 100WR router has, in addition to its 4 Ethernet and Wi-Fi ports, also got a USB port. I feel that you are most likely better off using an Ethernet port, but if for some reason you need a USB port, that option is still available to you.
